Long Beach State Evens Big West Baseball Series Against Cal Poly
4/9/2022 8:22:00 PM | Baseball
The Dirtbags' 28 runs scored tied a Cal Poly record for most runs scored by an opponent -- CSUN tallied 28 runs against the Mustangs in 1995 -- and their 32 hits shattered the mark of 29 set by Cal State Fullerton in 2003.
The win by Long Beach State evened the series at a game apiece and sets up the rubber game Sunday at 1 o'clock. Cal Poly is 19-12 overall and 6-2 for a third-place tie with CSU Bakersfield in the Big West while Long Beach State improved to 15-14 and 5-6.
As it did in Friday night's 4-1 victory, Cal Poly scored all of its runs in the first inning. Tate Samuelson singled to left field to drive in both runs, one of them courtesy of obstruction on Long Beach State third baseman Jonathon Long.
That tied the game at 2-2 -- the Dirtbags scored twice in the top of the first on solo home runs by Charlie Loust and Rocco Peppi -- before Long Beach State broke the deadlock with two in the second inning and erupted for 18 runs over the next three frames to pull away.
Sebastian Kirchner retired the Dirtbags in order in the top of the ninth, preventing Long Beach State from scoring al least once in every inning.
In addition to Samuelson's two-run single in the first inning, Cal Poly's only other hit was a single up the middle by Samuelson with one out in the ninth. In Friday's game, the Mustangs were held to just one hit over the final eight innings.
Shortstop Brooks Lee went 0-for-4 as his 19-game hitting streak came to an end.
Chase Luttrell drove in six runs with a 4-for-5 day at the plate for Long Beach State. Sebastian Murillo was 4-for-7 with four singles and three RBIs while Peppi was 4-for-6 with one RBI. All three scored four times.
Loust, Chris Jimenez and Jonathan Long each added three hits and combined for seven RBIs for the Dirtbags.
The win went to Juaron Watts-Brown (1-3), the second of four Dirtbag pitchers used int he game. Watts-Brown tossed four scoreless innings with five strikeouts, one walk and no hits. Mustang southpaw Travis Weston (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs and eight hits over two-plus innings.
Senior right-hander Dylan Villalobos (0-1,3.14 ERA) of Cal Poly will face Long Beach State redshirt freshman right-hander Zach Voelker (4-0, 1.25 ERA) in the series finale.
