SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly scored four unearned runs in the fifth inning, thanks to three Dixie State errors, and Noah Larkin tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings in relief as Cal Poly defeated Dixie State 6-4 in the opener of a Saturday baseball doubleheader inside Baggett Stadium.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs completed a sweep of the twinbill and clinched the four-game series with a 9-0 victory in the nightcap as Travis Weston tossed a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts.
With the sweep, Cal Poly has won five straight games for the second time in three weeks and 10 of its last 11 contests, improving to 17-10 for the season. Dixie State fell to 13-13.
In the opener, Larkin (2-1) scattered three hits, walked two and struck out three in relief of Mustang starter Steven Brooks. Larkin earned his first win just four days earlier, pitching five innings in a victory over Santa Clara.
Left fielder Collin Villegas doubled twice and drove in three runs to lead Cal Poly's eight-hit offensive attack. Catcher Ryan Stafford added a single and double while Brooks Lee singled twice to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
Shane Taylor doubled and singled for Dixie State, which led 3-0 and 4-1 before Cal Poly rallied for a run in the third and four more in the fifth to turn the game around.
The loss was charged to Dixie State starter Dillon Holiday (2-4) as he allowed six runs (three earned) and seven hits over six innings.
Jason Franks earned his second save for Cal Poly, securing the final four outs with three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Weston hurled the second complete-game shutout of the season for the Mustangs, surrendering just two hits -- a one-out single up the middle by Tyler Hollow in the second inning and a leadoff single to left-center field by Mathew Ivancich in the third frame.
Weston, who surrendered five runs and four hits over 3 1/3 innings in his last start last weekend at UC San Diego, improved to 3-1 by not allowing any walks and throwing just 92 pitches, 67 for strikes. He retired the side in order seven times.
Cal Poly's other complete-game shutout this year was by Drew Thorpe in a three-hit 5-0 victory over Harvard on March 11. Thorpe and Franks also combined on a three-hit shutout in a 7-0 triumph at UC San Diego last weekend.
Weston notched three complete games -- one a loss -- for the Mustangs a year ago.
Cal Poly jumped to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Villegas singled to drive in two runs in the first inning and Joe Yorke added a two-run single of his own in the second frame.
Tate Samuelson's two-run double in the fourth broke the game open and Yorke added an RBI single in the sixth. Brooks Lee's sacrifice fly in the seventh completed the scoring.
Lee, who had an eight-game hitting streak earlier this season, extended his current hitting streak to 16 games with a double in the sixth inning. Lee is 25-for-63 (.397) with eight doubles, one triple, three home runs and 16 RBIs during the current streak, has at least one hit in 25 of Cal Poly's 27 games this season and currently sports a .429 batting average.
Yorke knocked in three runs with his two singles. Reagan Doss singled three times and was hit by a pitch while Matthias Haas added two singles. Villegas bumped his average up to .319 with his two-run single and has gone 15-for-35 (.429) with eight doubles, a triple and 17 RBIs in his last 11 games, lifting his average 103 points.
Sunday's series finale at noon will feature Cal Poly senior right-hander Dylan Villalobos (0-1, 3.18 ERA) against Dixie State sophomore righty Ryan Hardman (2-0, 3.86 ERA).
