SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly right-hander Drew Thorpe has earned his second Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week award.
Last Friday night, the Washington, Utah, native pitched a three-hit shutout in a 5-0 victory over Harvard, Cal Poly's first nine-inning complete-game shutout in four years. Trent Shelton blanked Hawai'i 16-0 on May 4, 2018.
Travis Weston shut out Cal State Fullerton 10-0 a year ago in a game called after seven innings due to the Big West's mercy rule in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thorpe did not allow a Harvard runner to reach third base, struck out 11 without a walk, retired the first 10 Harvard batters of the game and set the Crimson down in order six times.
Now 2-0 with a 2.22 ERA, Thorpe has notched double-digit strikeouts in all four starts this season and eight in his collegiate career. He threw 118 pitches and leads the Big West in strikeouts by 13.
Thorpe also earned the conference award on Feb. 24, 2020, when he struck out 13 BYU batters, still a career high and two shy of the school Division I record, over eight innings for his first collegiate win, a 10-0 victory.
Named Big West field player of the week was Rocco Peppi of Long Beach State. The freshman utility player hit .462 in four games, including a series win over No. 15 Gonzaga, with two home runs, five RBIs and five runs scored.
Cal Poly (7-9) opens Big West play this weekend, hosting CSUN (9-6) for a three-game series inside Baggett Stadium. First pitches will be 6 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
