SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly wraps up the home portion of its 2021-22 wrestling season Sunday by hosting Air Force and CSU Bakersfield inside Mott Athletics Center.
The trio of dual meets begins with Air Force meeting CSU Bakersfield at 10 a.m. Cal Poly will face Air Force at 11:30 a.m. and the Mustangs wrap up the tri-meet against CSU Bakersfield at 1 p.m.
The times were moved up a few hours to avoid conflicts with Super Bowl LVI.
Coach Jon Sioredas' Mustangs (2-2) are coming off a 21-10 loss at Oregon State last week. Air Force (3-6) hosts Wyoming on Thursday before visiting San Luis Obispo while CSU Bakersfield travels to Stanford, also on Thursday, before coming to San Luis Obispo.
While Cal Poly will send six nationally ranked wrestlers into battle in the two duals, CSU Bakersfield and Air Force each has two wrestlers in the top 33.
The card is highlighted by No. 1-ranked Mustang wrestler Evan Wick at 165 pounds. The transfer from Wisconsin and two-time NCAA All-American sports a 13-0 record this season. Among his wins this season are those against the Nos. 4, 6, 10 and 19th matmen, including a 6-2 decision against defending NCAA 165-pound national champion Shane Griffith of Stanford for first place in the Las Vegas Invitational.
Bernie Truax (10-1), who placed fourth at 174 pounds in the nationals a year ago, is ranked No. 5 at 184 this week. He defeated No. 12 Trey Munoz of Oregon State 5-2 in last week's dual and also owns five victories over four other nationally ranked wrestlers.
Adam Kemp (12-2) owns a No. 8 ranking at 174 with four of his victories against nationally ranked matmen while Legend Lamer (10-3), who edged No. 28 Corey Crooks of Oregon State in overtime last week, climbed to No. 16 this week.
Also ranked are 125-pounder Antonio Lorenzo and 141-pounder Lawrence Saenz. Lorenzo (12-7) owns a No. 29 ranking while Saenz (9-4) is ranked No. 31 in his weight class.
CSU Bakersfield's pair of ranked wrestlers are No. 23 Chance Rich (6-2) at 133 pounds and No. 27 Angelo Martinoni (18-9) at 141 pounds.
Air Force is led by No. 6 Wyatt Hendrickson (16-0) at 285 pounds and No. 30 Sam Wolf (13-5) at 174.
Cal Poly has never beaten Air Force. The Falcons are 7-0 against the Mustangs following a 29-14 triumph two years ago in Colorado Springs while CSU Bakersfield owns a 31-20-2 advantage versus Cal Poly after a 26-9 victory, also in February 2020.
The Falcons are coached by former Upper Iowa wrestler and head coach Sam Barber, in his seventh season at Air Force after serving five years as a Falcon assistant. Barber also was a head coach at Augsburg College (Minn.) and coached on the international level for 12 years.
Third-year CSU Bakersfield head coach Luke Smith served a year as interim head coach in 2019-20 and was the team's lead assistant coach the previous two seasons. He was head coach or assistant coach at Eastern Michigan from 2011-17 and also spent three seasons at Old Dominion. Smith started his coaching career at Central Michigan from 2008-09 after a successful four-year career with the Chippewas in which he was a four-time NCAA qualifier.
After this weekend, Cal Poly has one more dual meet on its schedule, visiting Stanford on Feb. 19. Arizona State will host the Pac-12 Championships on March 6 while the 2022 NCAA Division I National Championships will be held March 17-19 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
