
Mustangs Suffer Loss to No. 34 Memphis Saturday

TEMPE, Ariz. — Cal Poly six-match winning streak came to an end Saturday as the Mustangs lost to No. 34 Memphis, 4-0, at the second day of competition at the ASU 8-Team Tournament.Noah Berry and redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca got things off to a good start with a 6-2 win over Harry Rock and Pablo Malea.
The Tigers' (7-2) No. 2 pair of Oscar Cutting and Patrick Sydow then won at the No. 2 spot over Colter Smith and Bastiaan Weststrate 7-6. Then at the No 1 spot, Memphis' 18th ranked doubles pair in the country of David Stevenson and Jeremy Taylor beat Hendrik Inno and Joe Leather 7-6(3).
In singles, Malea beat redshirt junior Gary Vardanyan at the No. 5 spot 6-1, 6-1 to go ahead 2-0.
At the No. 3 spot, Stevenson beat Colter Smith 6-2, 6-2 before Memphis' No. 1 singles player Oscar Cutting gave Noah Berry his first loss of the season, 6-3, 7-6(5) to clinch the dual.
Cal Poly will now face Big West rival UC Santa Barbara Sunday at 12 p.m MT (11 a.m. PT) for a non-conference match.
