VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- A two-run home run by Matthias Haas in the fifth inning and a three-run double by Brooks Lee in the sixth powered Cal Poly to an 8-4 victory over Fresno State in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Baggett Stadium.
The win, snapping a six-game losing streak against the Bulldogs that stretched back to 2016, evened the record of Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs at 2-2 while Fresno State suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 3-1.
Cal Poly led 3-1 when Haas belted his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-center field for a 5-1 Mustang lead. Lee broke the game open with his bases-clearing double in the sixth.
Fresno State scored a run in the sixth and two more in the ninth, but couldn't complete the comeback.
Lee, who wears No. 22, celebrated "Twos"-day -- 2-22-2022 -- ina big way by producing a 3-for-4 night at the plate with two doubles and a single, driving in three runs and lifting his early season average to .400.
Hass, center fielder Reagan Doss and designated hitter Matt Lopez all had two hits apiece. One of Lopez's hits was an RBI double to dead center field in the third inning and Doss followed with a run-scoring single to score Lopez.
Tate Samuelson's 10-game hitting streak, carried over from last season, came to an end as the fifth-year senior third baseman went 0-for-5.
Fresno State, outhit 10-9, was led by catcher Zach Morgan and designated hitter Mason Grotto, each with a single and double, and first baseman Ivan Luna with a pair of singles. Center fielder Josh Lauck added his second home run of the year, a solo shot down the left-field line in the third inning that tied the game at 1-1.
Mustang starter Steven Brooks, in his first collegiate game, allowed a run and five hits over 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. He was relieved by Jason Franks (1-0), who gave up one run and one hit over 3 1/3 innings for the victory with a pair of strikeouts. Jake Buxton pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
The loss was charged to Kyle Pruhsmeier (0-1), the second of seven Bulldog pitchers, as he allowed the two runs in the third inning which snapped the 1-1 deadlock. Pruhsmeier pitched two innings, allowing two runs and three hits.
The two teams will play the rematch May 3 in Fresno.
Cal Poly plays its next two weekend series on the road, beginning with Missouri State. The Bears (2-2) fell to Oral Roberts 6-5 in Tulsa on Tuesday and will host the Mustangs for a single game Saturday at 11 a.m. Pacific and a doubleheader Sunday at 9 a.m. Pacific, all three contests to be played at the University of Texas at Arlington due to a wintry weather forecast in Springfield, Missouri.
Cal Poly, which hosts Portland on March 2, also plays a series at UNLV on March 4-6.
