MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — Sophomore men's swimmer Kieran McNulty won his second straight conference title in the 1650-yard (one mile) freestyle to highlight the Cal Poly men's and women's swimming and diving teams at the final day of competition at the MPSF Championships Saturday in Monterey Park.
McNulty, who already this week broke a school record in the 500 free, won Cal Poly's first individual conference championship of the week after swimming a time of 14:57.74, nearly six seconds ahead of the second place finisher. It is the second-fastest time in school history and the 22nd best time in NCAA Division I this year. It is also about 34 seconds faster than his conference title-winning time at last year's MPSF Championships.
In the men's 100 free, junior Ryan Iannaccone finished with a time of 44.59 which is the fifth-fastest time in school history. Iannaccone tied for 10th in the event.
In the women's 1650 free, junior Kaia Anderson placed eighth with a time of 17:18.23.
In the men's 200 back, senior Gennady Sytnik, who Friday broke his own school record in the 100 back, finished eighth with a time of 1:51.57.
In women's diving, senior Joelle Weltner set a personal-best score in the platform dive with a score of 177.30 which is also the fifth-best score in school history. She recorded a 12th place finish in the event.
Overall, the Mustang men's team finished fifth with a total score of 370.50 while the women's team finished seventh with a score of 173.
BYU won the championship on the men's side for the second straight year while UC San Diego took home the crown on the women's side.
