2/12/2022 9:53:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior guard Trevon Taylor (above) led four Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures with 15 points Saturday evening, but the Cal Poly men's program – after falling behind Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara midway through the first half – dropped a 69-64 decision inside Mott Athletics Center.
Sophomore forward Brantly Stevenson added 14 points for Cal Poly (5-17, 1-9), which never trailed UC Santa Barbara by more than 10 points in the second half, but never closed the deficit to fewer than five. Cal Poly outrebounded UC Santa Barbara (11-9, 3-5), 35-23, but dropped its ninth straight decision to the Gauchos after conceding a 52.3 (23-for-44) percent field goal mark.
Taylor missed a second career double-double for Cal Poly after finishing with a game high nine rebounds. Junior forward Alimamy Koroma and sophomore guard Camren Pierce added 10 points apiece for Cal Poly.
Playing three of its final six regular season games away from home, Cal Poly returns to action at UC Davis (Thursday, Feb. 17) and UC Riverside (Saturday, Feb. 19).
During Saturday's matchup, UC Santa was kept to a 0-for-5 shooting start and, with four different Mustangs recording buckets, Cal Poly led after four-and-a-half minutes, 10-0.
With Stevenson supplying nine points inside the opening eight minutes, Cal Poly led midway through the first half, 18-10.
Cal Poly, however, was kept to just two field goals during an ensuing five-minute span as the Gauchos surged ahead, 25-22.
Cal Poly trailed the remainder of the half – but never by more than five points – as UC Santa Barbara took a 33-28 edge in the break.
The Gauchos then found the opening two buckets of the second half to stretch their lead to 37-28.
Still facing a 48-39 deficit with 10 minutes to go, Cal Poly received a Pierce layup before freshman guard Julien Franklin knocked down a three-pointer to bring the Mustangs within five.
Cal Poly then came within five points of UC Santa Barbara three more times down the stretch.
