Mustangs Fall on the Road to CSUN in Big West Opener Thursday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Sophomore guard Annika Shah poured in a career-high 23 points to lead Cal Poly, but the Mustangs dropped their Big West opener on the road to CSUN Thursday night, 65-55.
Shah hit a career-high six threes on the way to her team-leading 23 points, 15 of which came in the second half. Senior guard Maddie Willett scored a season-high 10 points and graduate guard Nikola Kovacikova added nine points.
The Matadors (2-9, 1-0 BW), who outscored the Mustangs (3-6, 0-1 BW) 32-10 inside the paint, had four players score in double figures, led by Tess Amundsen's 13 points.
CSUN scored the first four points of the game before Cal Poly went on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes and led 17-12 after the first quarter. The Mustangs, who were without several players due to injury, opened the second quarter on a 5-2 run to go ahead by eight with 7:24 left in the half. The Matadors finished the first half on an 11-3 run to tie the score at halftime 25-25.
Tied at 34 apiece with just over five minutes left in the third, CSUN pulled ahead with a 12-3 run to end the quarter and take a 46-37 lead. That run continued into the fourth quarter as CSUN extended its lead to 51-38. The Mustangs got it back to within nine with 5:45 left in the game but never got any closer.
Cal Poly returns to San Luis Obispo for its Big West home opener Saturday against defending conference champion Hawai'i at 2 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
