Cal Poly Tops San Diego Christian to Close Non-Conference Action

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Graduate guard Chance Hunter (above) finished with a team high 12 points and forwards Ali Koroma and Brantly Stevenson added 10 apiece as the Cal Poly men's basketball program completed Big West Conference preparations Thursday afternoon with a 72-59 home victory against NAIA San Diego Christian inside Mott Athletics Center.
Sophomore guard Aidan Prukop added nine points for Cal Poly (6-6), which trailed just once while leading for the final 37 minutes. During the first matchup between the two programs, Cal Poly kept San Diego Christian (2-6) to a 38.6 (22-for-57) percent field goal mark while outrebounding the Hawks, 38-26.
Freshman forward Cole Haller finished with a career best eight points for Cal Poly, alongside senior guard Trevon Taylor. Cal Poly, which knocked down all nine free throw attempts, received rebounding contributions from all 11 players who appeared in the game and scoring contributions from nine.
Cal Poly begins its 27th season of Big West play when hosting CSUN on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs then close the 2022 calendar year at Hawai'i on Saturday, Dec. 31.
During Thursday's matchup, San Diego Christian produced the opening basket before Cal Poly recorded three of the next four field goals to take a 12-5 lead five-and-a-half minutes into action.
The Hawks responded with a three-point play from guard Josh O'Campo before being kept to just a solitary free throw during an ensuing seven-minute span. Cal Poly's corresponding 18-1 allowed the Mustangs to extend the lead to 30-9 seven-and-a-half minutes before the break.
After taking a 44-21 lead into the halftime, Cal Poly stretched the advantage as far as 53-23 following a Koroma jumper with 17 minutes to play.
The Mustangs still led, 66-40, with six-and-a-half minutes to play before San Diego Christian scored on three straight possessions. The Hawks eventually shortened the deficit to 12 points with three minutes to go, but closed no further.
