Mustangs Host Bethesda University in Monday Season Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Returning five starters, nine letterwinners and 80.5 percent of its scoring from a year ago and welcoming four Division I transfers during the offseason, the Cal Poly men's basketball program opens the 2022-23 regular season against National Christian College Athletic Association-affiliated and Anaheim-based Bethesda University on Monday, Nov. 7. Tip time from Mott Athletics Center is 7 p.m. for Cal Poly, which completed preparations for the regular season with a 72-60 home exhibition victory against Division II Cal State LA (Nov. 3). With the Mustangs starting their 79th season as a four-year program and 29th at the Division I level, Cal Poly will play half of its 32 regular season games inside Mott Athletics Center this winter. Bethesda (0-3) began its year with setbacks Life Pacific (Oct. 28), UC Merced (Oct. 29) and Westmont (Nov. 1). The Flames visit University of Antelope Valley Saturday evening before facing Cal Poly.

CAL POLY VERSUS BETHESDA AND NON-DIVISION I OPPOSITION: The Mustangs have defeated Bethesda in all three previous matchups, most recently handing the Flames a 100-46, season-opening defeat on Nov. 27, 2020. Since transitioning to the Division I level prior to the 1994-95 season, Cal Poly is 44-1 against non-Division I programs.
MUSTANGS TOP CAL STATE LA IN NOV. 3 EXHIBITION: Senior Alimamy Koroma led four Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures with 15 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds as Cal Poly completed preparations for the regular season with a 72-60 exhibition victory against Division II Cal State LA. Senior guard Trevon Taylor added 11 points and junior guard Camren Pierce and junior forward Bryan Penn-Johnson finished with 10 apiece for Cal Poly, which led Cal State LA wire-to-wire.
LOOKING AHEAD (NOV. 10, 18): Embarking on its first road trip of the season, Cal Poly visits 2022 NCAA Tournament qualifier San Francisco on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. and Stanford on Friday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Making its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 24 years last March, San Francisco fell in the opening round to seventh-seeded Murray State. USF, hosting Cal Poly for the first time since the Mustangs secured a 65-44 road win on Nov. 18, 2014, opens its year against Texas Southern on Monday, Nov. 7. Stanford, welcoming Cal Poly for the first time in five seasons, opens its year against Pacific (Monday, Nov. 7) before visiting Wisconsin (Friday, Nov. 11) and hosting No. 19 San Diego State (Tuesday, Nov. 15).
