Cal Poly Tops Cal State LA in Thursday Exhibition, 72-60
11/3/2022 10:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior forward Alimamy Koroma led four Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures with 15 points and completed a Thursday evening double-double with 10 rebounds as the Cal Poly men's basketball program completed preparations for the regular season with a 72-60 exhibition victory against Division II Cal State LA inside Mott Athletics Center.
Senior guard Trevon Taylor added 11 points and junior guard Camren Pierce and junior forward Bryan Penn-Johnson finished with 10 apiece for Cal Poly, which led Cal State LA wire-to-wire.
Cal Poly opens the 2022-23 regular season when hosting CCCAA program Bethesda University on Monday, Nov. 7. Tip time from Mott Athletics Center is 7 p.m. for Cal Poly, which then visits San Francisco (Thursday, Nov. 10) and Stanford (Friday, Nov. 18).
A three-pointer three minutes into action from graduate guard Chance Hunter – who led all players with five assists – handed Cal Poly an early 8-4 lead and the Mustangs continued by holding Cal State LA without a field goal for an ensuing seven-minute span. Taylor helped extend the lead to 22-6 with a three-pointer nine minutes before the break.
Cal Poly, which limited Cal State LA to a 23.1 (6-for-26) percent field goal mark during the opening half, led by as much as 30-10 before taking a 31-17 advantage into the break.
Into the second half, Cal State LA cut Cal Poly's lead to single digits three times, eventually shortening the deficit to 66-60 with 58 seconds to go. Cal Poly, however, received a dunk and two free throws from Koroma on successive possessions and, with Cal State LA forced to foul once more to regain possession, Pierce sealed the win with two late free throws.
