Late Comeback Comes Up Just Short as Cal Poly Falls to Sacramento State Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore guard Annika Shah poured in a career-high 17 points but Cal Poly, down as much as 19 in the fourth quarter, saw its late comeback fall just short as Sacramento State won 70-62 Friday at the first game of the Holiday Beach Classic inside Mott Athletics Center.
In addition to leading the Mustangs (2-4) in points, Shah also led the team in assists with four. Graduate guard Oumou Toure posted a season-high 14 points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Jazzy Anousinh added nine points on 4-6 shooting.
The Hornets (4-1) got out to a 13-5 lead through the first five minutes of the opening quarter. With one minute left in the first quarter, Sacramento State took a 24-9 lead before Cal Poly ended the quarter scoring four straight points to cut the lead down to 11.
After a Shah three with six minutes left in the second quarter cut the Hornets lead down to eight, Sacramento State went on a 9-2 run over the next four minutes to push their lead back up to 15 and led by 13 at halftime.
Sacramento State took a 17-point lead into the fourth quarter and pushed it up to 19 after scoring on its first possession of the fourth. The Mustangs responded with a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to get it within 10.
After the Hornets took a 65-51 lead with 2:20 left before nine consecutive points scored by Cal Poly got the lead down to five with one minute left. After Sacramento State's Kahlaijah Dean, who led the Hornets in scoring with 18 points, made a pair of free throws to go up seven, Shah made a jumper to cut it back down to five with 24 seconds left but that's as close as Cal Poly got.
The Mustangs will close out the Holiday Beach Classic Saturday at 2:20 p.m. against San Jose State.
