Mackenzie Samuel Named Big West Defensive Player of the Week

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After securing back-to-back clean sheets against UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton, sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel has been named Big West Defensive Player of the Week.
This is the second time the San Diego native has received Big West weekly honors. Last season, she was named Big West Freshman of the Week on Oct. 11, 2021.
Samuel made three saves in a 1-0 road victory over the Highlanders this past Thursday and earned four saves in a scoreless draw at Fullerton on Sunday.
The Valhalla High grad has recorded four straight clean sheets and seven this season, tied for the most in the Big West. Her seven shutouts are the most by a Cal Poly goalkeeper in a single season since Carol Hoover finished the 2009 season with a program record 11.
Samuel, a 2021 All-Big West second team selection, currently leads the conference in shutouts per match, is third in save percentage (.778) and fourth in total saves (56).
Across her career, Samuel has recorded 11 clean sheets, 77 saves and a 1.051 goals against average.
