Mustangs Fall at Home Saturday to Big West Leader Hawai’i
1/22/2022 9:43:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore point guard Camren Pierce (above) finished with a career high 16 points and junior forward Alimamy Koroma recorded his second collegiate double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Cal Poly men's basketball program Saturday evening, but the Mustangs – after erasing a double-digit first-half deficit versus Big West Conference leader Hawai'i – fell inside Mott Athletics Center, 69-56.
Pierce added a game high seven assists for Cal Poly (4-12, 1-4), which trailed by as much as 16 points during the first half, but by just two at the break. However, Hawai'i (9-5, 4-0) – which moved into a first-place tie atop the Big West standings alongside Cal State Fullerton (11-5, 4-0) – never trailed after opening the second half with a 12-2 run.
Cal Poly shot a season best 89.5 (17-for-19) percent from the free throw line, but saw a three-game home winning streak versus Hawai'i snapped.

During Saturday's matchup, Hawai'i converted its opening four three-point attempts to take a 16-7 lead after just five-and-a-half minutes.
A three-pointer from Cal Poly junior guard Trevon Taylor cut the disadvantage to six points, but the Rainbow Warriors responded with an 11-5 run to stretch their lead to 31-15 with just under eight minutes remaining in the half.
Still trailing with five minutes to go, 36-23, Cal Poly – backboned by five straight Pierce free throws – closed the half with an 11-0 run and faced just a 36-34 deficit at the break.
Hawai'i, however, kept Cal Poly to just one field goal during the opening seven minutes of the second half, lengthening the lead to 47-36.
Still down by double digits with 12 minutes remaining, Cal Poly received Pierce and Koroma layups to draw within six points.
Hawai'i though kept Cal Poly scoreless for an ensuing five-minute stretch to pull away.
