Powell Breaks School Record as Mustangs Sweep UC Santa Cruz

Max Powell (pictured) broke a school record in the 1-meter as both the Cal Poly men's and women's swimming & diving teams beat UC Santa Cruz Saturday afternoon.
The Mustang men and women's teams combined to win 26 of the 32 events with seven different Mustangs winning two individual events.
Powell was one of them as he won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dive events. He broke the school record in the 1-meter dive of 310.13 that had stood since 2018 with a score of 312.21 Saturday. He won the 3-meter dive with a score of 259.20.
Cal Poly also won both diving events on the women's side. Junior Jacqueline Samaniego took home the crown in the 1-meter dive with a score of 273.60. In the 3-meter dive it was senior Molly Wilson winning with a score of 254.70.
There were three Mustang women's swimmers who won multiple events on the afternoon. Junior Kaia Anderson won both the 1,000 free (10:47.02) and the 500 free (5:12.59).
Freshman Taylor Lyon won the 200 butterfly (2:09.38) and the 200 backstroke (2:13.66). She also had a second-place finish in the 100 fly (1:00.04).
Junior Amy Harter's two individual wins came in the 50 free (24.20) and the 100 free (54.35).
On the men's side, there were three Mustang swimmers who collected two individual wins. Sophomore Kieran McNulty took first in both the 1,000 free (9:21.70) and the 500 free (4:31.46).
Senior Gennady Sytnik won both the 100 backstroke (51.63) and the 200 backstroke (1:54.63).
Junior Brian Wong had wins in both the 200 fly (1:53.16) and the 200 IM (1:57.53).
Other individual winners on the men's side included senior Lars Worlund in the 200 free (1:43.74), senior Christopher Hogan in the 100 breast (59.10), senior Brandon Toland in the 50 free (21.26), sophomore Justin Mills in the 100 free (47.33), junior Andre Yarcan in the 200 breast (2:10.17), and sophomore Aidan Blair in the 100 fly (51.29),
Other winners on the women's side included junior Caroline Judson in the 200 breast (2:31.25) and junior Samantha Rankin in the 200 IM (2:11.84).
The Cal Poly men's team also won two team relay events in the meet. The Mustang quartet of Sytnik, Yarcan, Wong, and Toland combined to win the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:27.41. The team of McNulty, Sytnik, Mills and Toland later won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:25.76.
Overall, the Mustang men's team beat UC Santa Cruz by a score of 227-65 while the women's team won 180-114.
