SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly has announced the transfers of baseball players John Lagattuta, an outfielder from Cal, and Matthias Haas, an infielder from Brown, after both recently signed financial aid agreements.
Lagattuta, a Davis High School graduate, has one year of eligibility remaining while Haas, a Bishop O'Dowd graduate, has four years to play four seasons.
Lagattuta, who bats left and throws right, set career highs in nearly every statistical category in his final season with the Bears this spring. In 47 games (34 starts), primarily as a designated hitter and in the corner outfield positions, he hit .230 with three home runs, 20 RBIs and 15 runs scored.
Lagattuta hit his first home run of the season in Cal's Pac-12-opening victory at Utah and added his second the next week at San Jose State. He also homered at Washington.
Lagattuta tallied four two-hit efforts in a six-game span from April 13-23, produced three-hit contests versus California Baptist and Arizona and added three runs, a triple and two RBIs in his 3-for-4 performance against California Baptist. He compiled nine multi-hit games and three multi-RBI contests.
In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Lagattuta played in nine of Cal's 16 games, including four starts, and hit .238 with three RBIs, all in a 2-for-3 effort at Long Beach State (Feb. 15). He was named to the 2020 Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll.
Lagattuta made eight starts and played in 11 other contests as a sophomore in 2019, and contributed two doubles, a pair of home runs and six RBIs. He homered twice, against Oregon and Stanford, and added a two-run pinch-hit double versus Washington State.
As a freshman in 2018, Lagattuta played in five games with one start, knocking in a run in his collegiate debut against CSU Bakersfield.
Lagattuta was named Male Athlete of the Year in 2017 at Davis High School after a standout senior season as he hit .451 with a .500 on-base percentage, 46 hits, 38 RBI, 33 runs scored, nine doubles, six triples, .774 slugging percentage and five steals.
He was named Delta League MVP and earned spots on the All-Delta League First Team, All-City First Team (SportsStars Magazine), All-Metro First Team, MaxPreps First Team, All-State First Team (Cal-Hi Sports) and All-NorCal First Team. Lagattuta also was named Davis Enterprise Male Athlete of the Year and Bobby Jones MVP.
Lagattuta led the Delta League in batting average, slugging percentage and hits as a senior and hit for the cycle at the Boras Classic.
He played club ball for the NorCal Black Sox, earning 2017 California All-Region Honorable Mention, and was named to the 2016 PG World Series All-Tournament Team. He participated in the 2017 Optimist All-Star Game in Sacramento.
Lagattuta also excelled on the gridiron and played two years of varsity football as a quarterback and safety. He was named to the All-Delta League First Team and All-Metro First Team as a senior in 2016 after completing 117 of 198 passes for 1,257 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushing for 494 yards and eight scores.
Away from athletics, Lagattuta was a 2017 Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and 2016 AP Scholar. He earned the Seal of Biliteracy, compiled a 4.3 grade-point average and was business manager of the Davis High School student newspaper, the Blue Devil HUB.
Lagattuta's sister, Kaitlyn, played softball at Stanford from 2015-18.
Haas attended Brown for two years before electing to transfer to Cal Poly.
Brown and the rest of the Ivy League did not play any games during the 2021 season and Haas played in just one contest during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, starting at second base against Presbyterian and going 0-for-4.
Haas was a shortstop at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, Calif., earning three all-West Alameda County Conference honors and a pair of All-CIF-North Coast Section accolades. Twice he landed on the California Baseball Coaches Association Northern California Team.
Haas hit .333 as a sophomore, .455 as a junior and .390 as a senior, completing his prep career with a .392 average, including 26 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 45 RBIs and 28 steals in 82 varsity games. He also pitched during his final two seasons, compiling a 3-1 mark and 2.23 ERA in 16 mound appearances.
Haas was a four-year honor roll member and was a member of ECO Leaders. He also has played for the EJ Warriors and currently is playing this summer for the North Shore Navigators.
