SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly's historic 2026 baseball season has resulted in its first NCAA All-Americans in four years.
Ryan Tayman and Nick Bonn are emerging as Cal Poly's top award winners as both were honored by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, the American Baseball Coaches Association and Perfect Game on Wednesday.
The NCBWA membership placed both Tayman and Bonn on its Division I All-American third team.
The ABCA's 47 head coaches in the West Region voted Tayman onto the All-West Region first team and Bonn on the second unit.
Perfect Game rewarded Bonn's performance on the mound this season with a spot on its All-American third team.
The pair, both of whom have played one season at Cal Poly by way of the NCAA Transfer Portal, are the first Mustang All-Americans since shortstop Brooks Lee and starting pitcher Drew Thorpe captured multiple national honors following the 2022 season. Lee was a five-time All-American in 2022 after claiming four such awards in 2021 while Thorpe swept all six All-American honors in 2022.
Tayman broke the all-time school record for putouts in a single season with 546 and tied the mark for home runs with 18. Monty Waltz set the record in 1985 and Steve Wood matched it in 1998 while Eric Peterson held the old putout mark of 518 set in 1979.
Named Big West Co-Field Player of the Year last month, Tayman was the team's top hitter by 29 points this season, batting .357 with 19 doubles and 57 RBIs. The junior catcher from Grover Beach and a graduate of Arroyo Grande High School was particularly successful in the postseason with a .394 batting average and hit .366 in 30 conference games.
Tayman was 6-for-15 with two doubles in the Big West tournament and 6-for-12 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs in the Los Angeles Regional on the way to a spot on the all-regional team. He played his first two college seasons at Cal before transferring to Cal Poly a year ago.
Bonn shattered the single-season saves record at Cal Poly with 17, including 11 during Big West play. The senior right-hander earned three saves in the conference tournament and added two more in the Los Angeles Regional, finishing the year with a 3.44 ERA.
A graduate of Laguna Beach High School in Orange County, Bonn pitched at Pepperdine for two seasons with 13 starts as a sophomore and at Dallas Baptist for one year as a reliever before landing at Cal Poly for his final college campaign.
Bonn struck out 50 batters over 49 2/3 innings, earned a victory at UC Irvine on May 3 with three scoreless frames and did not allow a run in his six postseason appearances on the mound, scattering four hits over 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts.
UC Santa Barbara pitcher Jackson Flora, Oregon State closer Albert Roblez, USC pitcher Mason Edwards and UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky, outfielder Will Gasparino and closer Easton Hawk, all of whom played against Cal Poly this season, were named to the NCBWA All-American first team.
Tayman, Bonn and Flora were the only Big West players honored by the NCBWA. Joining the trio on the ABCA's All-West Region teams were outfielder Paul Contreras and starting pitcher Mikiah Negrete, both from Cal State Fullerton on the second team.
Cal Poly posted a 39-24 record this spring, the sixth-most victories in program history. The Mustangs captured both the Big West regular season and tournament championships, claimed their first NCAA regional title with a 3-0 mark at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium and for the first time qualified for a Super Regional.
First Team ABCA All-Region first-team selections are eligible for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The 2026 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-America teams will be announced on Friday prior to the start of the NCAA Division I College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
The ABCA/Rawlings postseason awards schedule continues with the announcement of the NCAA Division I Gold Glove finalists on Monday, June 15, followed by the Gold Glove winners in all divisions on Wednesday, June 17. ABCA/Rawlings National Pitchers and Position Players of the Year across all divisions will be announced on June 22.
Baseball America and D1Baseball.com are expected to announce their All-American teams in the coming days.
