DAVIS, Calif. -- Cal Poly banged out 14 hits, including home runs by Brooks Lee and Tate Samuelson, and Andrew Alvarez earned his seventh victory as the Mustangs defeated UC Davis 5-1 in the first game of a Saturday Big West doubleheader on Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Baseball Stadium.
The win snapped a seven-game Mustang losing streak on the road and improved Cal Poly's record to 25-25 overall and 15-19 in conference games. UC Davis, a 5-2 winner in the series opener Friday, fell to 14-37 and 8-26.
Lee smashed a solo home run to left field with two outs in the first inning. His ninth home run of the year is the most by a Mustang since Zach Zehner homered nine times in 2015.
Samuelson's sixth home run of the year, a career high, was a two-run blast in the third frame. Samuelson hit five home runs in both his freshman and sophomore seasons.
Cal Poly added single runs in the fourth and sixth frames on sacrifice flies by Cole Cabrera and Lee, respectively, to pull away.
UC Davis, held to just four hits on the day, scored its lone run in the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Jalen Smith.
Alvarez (7-3) scattered four hits in his first career complete game with four walks and six strikeouts, throwing 104 pitches.
The loss was charged to UC Davis starter Tim Weiser (2-7) as he gave up four runs and eight hits over 3 1/3 innings.
Cal Poly's 14 hits included three singles by Nick Marinconz and two hits each by Mylews Emmerson, Samuelson, Nick DiCarlo and Reagan Doss.
Second game of the doubleheader will start at 3:20 p.m.
