Improved Scores Lift Cal Poly to 21st Place in Wyoming Cowboy Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Cal Poly's four scoring golfers lowered their scores by almost three strokes Tuesday, climbing one spot to 21st place after the final round of play in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on the Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course.
Austin Liu, Tanner Podres, Will Draper and Joey Zambri all scored between a 72 and 74 over the final 18 holes, averaging 73.0 strokes. Over 36 holes Monday, the quartet of Mustangs averaged 75.9 strokes.
Coach Phil Rowe's Mustangs finished in 21st place following a final-round four-person 292 total on the 7,334-yard, par-72 layout for a 34-over-par 898 total.
San Diego State claimed the team title in wire-to-wire fashion, posting a 283 total Tuesday for a 33-under-par 831 aggregate. TCU was six shots back in second place, followed by Colorado at 840.
Liu was Cal Poly's top finisher, following Monday's 70 and 72 with a 74 Tuesday for a 216 total and a tie for 33rd place. Podres (76-78-73) and Draper (78-77-72) shared 93rd place with four other golfers at 227 while Zambri (80-76-73) finished 101st with a 229 total.
Barclay Brown of Stanford climbed from sixth place to the top of the leaderboard with a final-round 65 and a 14-under-par 202 total, two strokes ahead of a trio of runners-up -- Riley Lewis of Loyola Marymount, Filippo Celli of TCU and Puwit Anupansuebsai of San Diego State.
Liu's 43 pars over 54 holes were the most in the field of 120 golfers.
This weekend, Cal Poly plays its final tournament prior to the Big West Conference Championships, competing in the El Macero Classic hosted by UC Davis on Saturday through Monday at the El Macero Golf Club in Sacramento.
