SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- No. 27 UC Santa Barbara overcame an early 1-0 deficit with four solo home runs Friday afternoon, earning a 4-1 victory over Cal Poly in the opener of a four-game Big West Conference baseball series inside Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Bryce Willits, Jason Willow, Jordan Sprinkle and Cole Cummings all homered with the bases empty as the Gauchos, who now lead the Big West with 43 home runs this season, improved to 27-12 for the season and 18-7 in conference games.
First-place UC Irvine (17-4) wiped out an early 4-0 deficit and beat Long Beach State 12-5 on Friday, maintaining its one-game lead over UC Santa Barbara.
The Mustangs vs. Gauchos game featured 28 strikeouts combined by the two starting pitchers.
UC Santa Barbara's Michael McGreevy (6-1) struck out 15 Mustangs over eight innings to lift his Big West-leading total for the season to 85. He allowed one run and two hits with no walks.
Cal Poly redshirt freshman Drew Thorpe (4-4) pitched his seventh quality start of the year and established a new career high for strikeouts in a game with 13, surpassing the 12 he notched against Long Beach State three weeks ago as well as versus BYU a year ago.
Thorpe gave up two runs and four hits over 6 2/3 innings with one walk. He now has 81 strikeout this year, second in the Big West.
In four of his 11 starts this season, Thorpe has received two runs or less of run support from the offense.
Cal Poly grabbed a 1-0 lead on third baseman Tate Samuelson's fourth home run of the year, a solo shot over the scoreboard in left field leading off the second inning.
The Mustangs, however, produced just one other hit in the game, a fifth-inning single by Samuelson.
Cal Poly did not strand any baserunners as Samuelson was erased on a strikeout-caught stealing double play notched by the Gauchos ending the fifth. The Mustangs were retired in order seven times, six by McGreevy and the seventh by Carter Benbrook in the ninth for his third save.
UC Santa Barbara's seven hits in the 2-hour, 18-minute game were collected by seven different players. Former Cal Poly football running back Broc Mortensen, who played baseball at Cuesta College in 2019 and 2020, tripled for the Gauchos.
The two Blue-Green rivals play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. with southpaws Travis Weston 3-5, 3.47 ERA) and Andrew Alvarez (5-2, 4.38 ERA) start for Cal Poly on the mound -- Weston in the opener and Alvarez the nightcap.
