VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Redshirt freshman right-hander Drew Thorpe scattered seven hits over seven innings and Cal Poly rallied from an early 2--0 deficit to beat UC Riverside 4-2 in the opener of a four-game Big West Conference baseball series Friday night inside Baggett Stadium.
Thorpe (4-3) threw a career-high 121 pitches and struck out seven with three walks for the victory. Kyle Scott, another freshman right-hander, pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts for his fourth save.
The win, Cal Poly's first in a Big West series opener this season, lifted the Mustangs to 18-15 on the year and 8-9 in conference games. UC Riverside fell to 10-18 and 8-13.
The Highlanders scored single runs in the first and third innings for their 2-0 lead. Travis Bohall opened the game with a triple and scored on a single by Ely Stuart. Ethan Payne doubled leading off the third, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball.
Four singles by the bottom part of the Mustang batting order and a sacrifice fly by Brooks Lee resulted in three runs and a 3-2 lead for Cal Poly in the fourth.
Nick DiCarlo and Joe Yorke singled before Reagan Doss singled to right field for an RBI. Nick Marinconz singled through the right side of the UC Riverside infield for an RBI, tying the game at 2-2. Lee's Big West-leading sixth sacrifice fly of the year to left broke the tie.
Cal Poly added an insurance run in the sixth on a double steal. Sam Biller led off with a double to the gap in right-center field and moved to third on a groundout. Lee was intentionally walked and both Lee and Biller executed the double steal for a 4-2 Mustang lead.
In the eighth, UC Riverside loaded the bases with nobody out on two singles and a walk, but Scott secured a strikeout and induced Anthony Mata to ground into an inning-ending double play, Lee fielding the grounder near second base, stepping on the bag and throwing to first base.
Cal Poly's nine hits included two singles by Doss and the double by Biller. UC Riverside outhit the Mustangs 10-9, led by Bohall, Stuart and Nathan Webb with two hits each.
The loss went to Highlander starter Zach Jacobs (1-3), who gave up four runs and nine hits over seven innings with three walks and five strikeouts.
Cal Poly turned two double plays. In addition, the Mustangs threw out a UC Riverside runner trying to score in the first inning. Webb doubled to left-center field and Payne tried to score from first base, but a strong throw by Biller near the wall and the relay by Lee to catcher Myles Emmerson ended the inning.
The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 o'clock with southpaws Andrew Alvarez and Travis Weston on the mound for Cal Poly. Sunday's series finale also starts at 1 p.m.
