Cal Poly Squanders Four-Run Lead in 11-6 Loss to UC Irvine
4/16/2021 10:00:00 PM | Baseball
Cal Poly knocked out Trenton Denholm, the 2019 Big West Pitcher of the Year, in the fourth inning, scoring a run on an RBI single by Myles Emmerson for a 5-1 advantage.
But the Mustangs couldn't hold the lead as the visiting Anteaters outscored Cal Poly 10-1 the rest of the way for the win.
UC Irvine improved to 20-10 for the season and 14-3 in the Big West, maintaining its one-game lead over UC Santa Barbara, The Gauchos routed UC San Diego 15-2 on Friday.
After giving up a run in the top of the third, Cal Poly scored four times in the bottom of the inning. The first four Mustang batters -- Emmerson, Brooks Lee, Matt Lopez and Tate Samuelson -- all singled for the first two runs and Nick DiCarlo capped the rally with a two-run single up the middle for a 4-1 lead.
Reagan Doss opened the fourth with a double to left field, chasing Denholm, who had thrown 83 pitches in three-plus innings. Emmerson's single through the right side of the UC Irvine infield gave Cal Poly a 5-1 lead.
UC Irvine quickly struck for four runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. Nathan Church and Mike Peabody highlighted the uprising with two-RBI hits.
Joe Yorke's two-out single to right field in the fifth gave Cal Poly a 6-5 lead, but it turned out to be the last run the Mustangs would score in the game as UC Irvine turned it around with six unanswered runs over the last four frames.
Dillon Tatum tied the game in the sixth with his sixth home run of the year and Luke Spillane's sacrifice fly in the seventh gave the Anteaters the lead for good at 7-6. UC Irvine broke the game open with a four-run ninth on a bases-loaded walk and hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice fly and an infield single.
Both teams used four pitchers and neither starter was involved in the decision. Cal Poly's Drew Thorpe exited the game in the fifth after giving up five runs and five hits.
Tanner Brooks (2-1) earned the win, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless frames, and Jacob King secured the final six outs for his third save.
Kyle Scott (1-1) suffered the loss, giving up the tying and go-ahead runs and allowing four runs and five hits over 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.
Each team collected 11 hits.
Church finished 3-for-4, all singles, and knocked in three runs for UC Irvine. Peabody added two doubles and three RBIs. Both are hitting .365 for the season as the Nos. 1-2 hitters in the Anteater batting order.
Brooks Lee produced his 16th double of the season, second in the nation, and also singled twice for Cal Poly, boosting his average to .373. Emmerson and DiCarlo each added two hits.
Cal Poly wasted two early scoring opportunities. Denholm hit the first two Mustang batters of the game and also walked a pair of Mustangs in the second, but all four runners were stranded, part of the 11 total left on base by Cal Poly.
The two teams play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday with southpaws Andrew Alvarez (4-2, 5.45 ERA) and Travis Weston (3-3, 2.60 ERA) on the mound for Cal Poly.
