VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Freshman right-hander Bryce Warrecker earned his first collegiate victory and second baseman Taison Corio drove in three runs with a double and triple as Cal Poly salvaged one win in its four-game Big West Conference baseball series against UC San Diego with a 6-2 triumph Sunday afternoon inside Baggett Stadium.
Warrecker (1-1) struck out three, walked two and scattered three hits, throwing 86 pitches. One of the two runs he gave up was unearned, his ERA dropping from 14.85 to 9.26.
After Warrecker gave up two runs on three hits and a Mustang error in the top of the first inning, Mustang 19th-year head coach Larry Lee made a visit to the mound.
"There were a few choice words," admitted Lee, "but I also stressed the importance of maintaining the mechanics that he prepared for in his bullpen session and not be concerned with their running game. I told him his mechanics were much more important to focus on -- the quality of his pitches and his mechanics.
"The bottom line is to compete and execute his pitches," Lee added. "They are not a running team and, if you put your emphasis on their running game, it affects your pitch quality."
After the meeting on the mound with his head coach, Warrecker retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced during the rest of his five-inning stint on the mound. The one base runner the Santa Barbara High School graduate allowed, via a walk in the third inning, was erased on a double play.
With the win, Cal Poly improved to 12-9 overall and 4-4 in Big West games. UC San Diego slipped to 6-10 and 3-1.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, Cal Poly bounced right back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. After two walks and a dropped fly ball in left field loaded the bases with two outs, Corio cleared the bases with a two-run double plus a Triton throwing error.
The Mustangs added three more runs in the third. Brooks Lee doubled with one out to spark the rally. Tate Samuelson's RBI single, Corio's run-scoring triple down the right-field line and Nick DiCarlo's RBI single gave Cal Poly a 6-2 advantage.
There was no scoring the rest of the game.
Warrecker turned the ball over to Carlo Lopiccolo and Bryan Woo, who combined for four scoreless innings of two-hit baseball, Woo striking out two.
Cal Poly outhit UC San Diego 8-5, led by Corio with a single, double and triple. Second baseman Jackson Kritsch singled twice for the Tritons.
The Mustangs, who entered the series with a .301 team batting average, hit just .244 against UC San Diego, led by Corio (5-for-9), Lopez (6-for-13) and Joe Yorke (5-for-15). The trio combined for eight RBIs.
Cal Poly takes a break from Big West play next weekend, hosting San Jose State for a three-game non-conference series Thursday through Saturday. Game times are 6 p.m. both Thursday and Friday and 1 o'clock Saturday. About 600 fans will be permitted to attend the game.
