UC San Diego Sweeps Twinbill, Clinches Big West Baseball Series

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Brandon Weed and Izaak Martinez combined to limit Cal Poly to one run and six hits while UC San Diego produced a 13-hit offensive attack in a 6-1 victory in the nightcap, completing a sweep of a Big West Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon inside Baggett Stadium.
The Tritons, who won the opener 12-9, have claimed the series with victories in the first three games and improved to 6-9 for the year and 3-0 in Big West games. Cal Poly fell to 11-9 and 3-4.
Weed (1-2) tossed six innings for the win, allowing one run and scattering four hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Martinez earned his first save with three scoreless innings of two-hit baseball, striking out three.
The loss went to Mustang southpaw Travis Weston (2-2) as he allowed three runs and nine hits over five innings. Kyle Scott also gave up three runs on four hits in three innings of relief.
Cal Poly's six hits included two singles by designated hitter Matt Lopez, lifting his average to a team-leading .456. Cal Poly entered the series with three regulars hitting over .400, but Brooks Lee is 3-for-13 in the series, his average slipping to .383, while Myles Emmerson is 1-for-13 and now is hitting .384.
Lee's two-out single down the right-field line in the third inning scored Cal Poly's only run of the nightcap.
UC San Diego parlayed four doubles into runs, led by right fielder Brock Kleszcz with four hits and an RBI.
In the opener, Blake Baumgartner and Paul Gozzo belted three-run home runs and Blake Fitzgerald added two solos shots as UC San Diego defeated Cal Poly, 12-9.
Jackson Kritsch contributed a two-run double for the Tritons, playing their first season in Division I and playing the Mustangs for the first time ever in baseball.
Chris Gilmartin (1-1) , who relieved Triton starter Aren Andrews in the fifth inning, earned the victory, securing four outs and giving up a run and one hit.
The loss went to Mustang southpaw starter Andrew Alvarez (3-1), who surrendered seven runs (six earned), all on home runs, and six hits over five innings with six strikeouts and one walk.
Trailing 7-3, Cal Poly had chances to climb back into the game, leaving two runners on base in both the fifth and sixth innings and the bases loaded in the seventh. In all, the Mustangs stranded 11 runners on the basepaths.
Lee doubled and tripled, scored both times and drove in one run to spark Cal Poly offensively. Lopez added a pair of RBI singles and designated hitter Joe Yorke knocked in three runs with a bases-loaded walk and two-run single.
