SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- A two-run home run by shortstop Ryan McNally in the ninth inning Friday afternoon wrapped up a 5-2 victory over Cal Poly in UC San Diego's first-ever Big West Conference baseball game.
Pitchers Cameron Leonard and Luke Mattson combined to hold the Mustangs to just two runs and seven hits, far below Cal Poly's averages of 7.5 runs and 10.5 hits per game this season.
Leonard (2-1) allowed one run and five hits over six innings for the win and Mattson gave up one run and two hits in three frames for his second save.
Cal Poly (11-7, 3-2 Big West) lost despite striking out 14 Triton batters while striking out just three times at the plate.
Mustang starter Drew Thorpe (2-2) struck out a season-high 10 UC San Diego (4-9, 1-0 Big West) hitters in six innings of work on the mound, but gave up three runs and eight hits. Coming off 5 1/3 scoreless innings in relief for a win at CSUN last weekend, reliever Bryan Woo pitched two scoreless frames Friday before giving up the home run to McNally in the ninth.
Cal Poly's seven hits were by seven different hitters, including doubles by Tate Samuelson and Joe Yorke. McNally and right fielder Tate Soderstrom each had two of UC San Diego's 11 hits.
Cal Poly scored first on an RBI single up the middle by left fielder Reagan Doss.
The Tritons took advantage of four consecutive hits opening the fifth inning, scoring three times for a 3-1 lead. Brock Kleszcz, McNally and Jackson Kritsch knocked in the runs with hits.
Cal Poly got one run back in the seventh on Cole Cabrera's RBI single up the middle, but the Mustangs were retired in order in both the eighth and ninth innings.
The two teams, who met for the first time in baseball Friday, will play a noon doubleheader Saturday inside Baggett Stadium, with southpaws Andrew Alvarez (3-0, 4.57 ERA) and Travis Weston (2-1, 2.84 ERA) to start on the mound for Cal Poly.
The series finale is Sunday at 1 o'clock.
