NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Redshirt freshman Brooks Lee snapped an 8-8 tie with a two-run single in the fifth inning and Kyle Scott pitched five solid innings in relief as Cal Poly clinched its Big West Conference baseball series at CSUN with a 10-8 victory Monday afternoon at Matador Field.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs, who dropped the opener of the four-game series 13-10 on Saturday, bounced back with Sunday's doubleheader sweep, 7-6 and 12-1, and improved to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in Big West games with Monday's triumph.
The game opened with plenty of offense.
Lee's two-run home run in the first inning gave Cal Poly a 2-0 lead and CSUN answered with seven runs in the bottom of the first.
The Mustangs quickly responded with six runs in the top of the second, Tate Samuelson capping the uprising with a three-run blast to left field, giving Cal Poly an 8-7 lead.
CSUN tied the game in the third and Lee's two-run single in the fifth snapped the deadlock. Neither team scored the rest of the way.
Lee drove in five of Cal Poly's 10 runs, going 3-for-5 at the plate, and catcher Myles Emmerson produced his third consecutive three-hit game, knocking in one run, as Cal Poly outhit the Matadors 15-12. Samuelson, Nick DiCarlo and Reagan Doss each had two hits.
Scott (1-0), the third of five Cal Poly pitchers used in the game, allowed one run and four hits over five innings for the victory, striking out a career-high six batters. After giving up a double and single to open the third inning, Scott retired 12 Matador batters in a row to keep the CSUN offense quiet.
Derek True and Drew Thorpe each pitched one scoreless, hitless inning to close out the game, Thorpe earning his first save.
Chad Wilson (0-1), the second of four Matador pitchers, suffered the loss as he gave up the two-run single by Lee in the fifth.
Cal Poly plays its next seven games at home, hosting Big West newcomer UC San Diego for four games this weekend and San Jose State for three non-conference contests next weekend. UC San Diego had the bye in the Big West schedule this weekend.
