Cal Poly Earns 7-6 Win Over CSUN in Doubleheader Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Collin Villegas homered leading off the seventh inning, snapping a 6-6 tie and lifting Cal Poly to a 7-6 win over CSUN in the opener of a Sunday doubleheader at Matador Field.
Cal Poly evened its Big West mark at 1-1 and improved to 9-6 overall. CSUN is 1-1 and 1-1.
Cal Poly jumped to a 4-0 lead with a run in the second inning and three more in the third. CSUN tallied six runs in the bottom of the third for a 6-4 lead.
The Mustangs scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to climb back on top.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Bryan Woo (1-2) pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings in relief for the win, matching his career high with seven strikeouts. He also struck out seven in a start against CSU Bakersfield in 2019.
Kyle Scott retired the side in order in the ninth inning for his first save.
Cal Poly's nine hits included three by left fielder Myles Emmerson and two each by Cole Cabrera and Villegas. Four of Cal Poly's seven RBIs were courtesy of sacrifice flies, including two by Tate Samuelson. Villega and Joe Yorke also had two RBIs.
Second game of the doubleheader starts at 4 p.m. with southpaw Travis Weston on the mound for Cal Poly. The series finale is Monday at 2 p.m.
