No. 6 Mustangs Win All Three Matches Saturday To Begin Season

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Cal Poly beach volleyball got off to a great start to kick off its 2021 season, beating all three of its opponents Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla.
The No. 6 Mustangs (3-0) took down the University of Tampa 5-0 in its first match, then beat No. 18 Georgia State 4-1, and finished things off with a 5-0 win over Southern Mississippi at the FSU Beach Courts on the campus of Florida State.
In the first match against the Tampa Spartans, Cal Poly's No. 4 pairing of redshirt sophomore Vanessa Roscoe and redshirt freshman Josie Ulrich got things started with a 21-17, 21-14 victory.
A short time later, the No. 5 pairing of freshman Piper Naess and redshirt sophomore Delanie Peranich put the Mustangs ahead 2-0 after a 21-13, 21-16 win.
Cal Poly's No. 1 pair of redshirt senior Emily Sonny and redshirt junior Macy Gordon then clinched the match for the Mustangs with a 21-14, 21-18 victory.
At the No. 2 spot, redshirt sophomore Jayelin Lombard and redshirt senior Amy Ozee got their first win as a pairing, taking their match 21-13, 21-19.
Rounding out the 5-0 win was Cal Poly's No. 3 pair of redshirt junior Tia Miric and redshirt sophomore Eleonore Johansen coming from behind after dropping the first set to battle to win the match 13-21, 22-20, 15-12. It's Johansen's first career win as a Mustang.
In the second match against No. 18 Georgia State, the No. 5 pairing of Naess and Peranich got the first point on the board after a hard-fought 21-19, 21-17 victory.
That was followed at the No. 4 position by Roscoe and Ulrich also winning their match in straight sets, 21-17, 21-19 to give Cal Poly a 2-0 lead.
After the Panthers got a win at the No. 3 spot to cut the lead to 2-1, the Mustangs' No. 2 pair of Lombard and Ozee clinched the victory for Cal Poly after a 21-12, 21-18 win.
At the No. 1 spot, Gordon and Sonny came back after dropping the first set to win the next two to take the victory 16-21, 21-7, 15-12 to complete the 4-1 win.
In the final match of the day against Southern Mississippi, Naess was paired up with fellow freshman Sam Strah at the No. 5 spot with the two taking the match in straight sets, 21-11, 21-10.
At the No. 4 position, Peranich teamed up with Ulrich for the first time and also took their match in straight sets, 21-16, 21-19.
At the No. 3 spot, Miric and Roscoe partnered together for a dominant 21-9, 21-13 victory.
Lombard and Ozee once again won their match at the No. 2 spot to sweep their afternoon with a 21-18, 21-7 victory.
The 5-0 win was completed by the No. 1 pair of Gordon and Sonny again, this time taking the match 21-9, 21-16.
The Mustangs will play No. 3 Florida State on Sunday at 6:45 a.m. PT. Cal Poly will be looking for its first-ever victory over the Seminoles. A link to follow live stats for that match can be found on the beach volleyball schedule page of GoPoly.com.
