No. 6 Mustangs Drop Sunday Road Match Against No. 3 Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Playing its final match of the opening weekend of the 2021 season, the Cal Poly beach volleyball team fell to No. 3 Florida State 0-5 Sunday in Tallahassee.
The No. 6 Mustangs (3-1) battled hard on all five courts. Cal Poly's No. 1 pairing of redshirt senior Emily Sonny and redshirt junior Macy Gordon took the Seminoles' (3-0) Molly McBain and Alaina Chacon to three sets with all three decided by two points. Gordon and Sonny ended up dropping the match by scores of 22-24, 22-20, 18-16. The duo finished the weekend 3-1 together after collecting three wins Saturday.
At the No. 2 spot, Cal Poly redshirt sophomore Jayelin Lombard and redshirt senior Amy Ozee also fell in close fashion, 19-21, 19-21 to former Mustang turned Seminole Torrey Van Winden and Keara Rutz. Ozee and Lombard did go 3-1 for the weekend after winning all three of their matches Saturday.
Florida State also won matches from the three, four and five spots in the lineup all in straight sets.
The 3-1 Mustangs will head back to California for a pair of matches against teams ranked in the top five of the AVCA Preseason Poll. Cal Poly will head to Los Angeles Thursday to face the 2019 NCAA Champions in UCLA at 10 a.m. and USC at 12:15 p.m. Both matches will be played on the campus of USC.
