SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Cal Poly wrestling team heads to Corvallis, Oregon, this weekend for the Pac-12 Conference Championships hosted by Oregon State.
Competition on Sunday inside Gill Coliseum begins at 11:30 a.m. Second round opens at 1:15 p.m., followed by the consolation semifinals at 3, the fifth- and sixth-place matches at 4:45 p.m. and the championship and consolation finals at 6 p.m., televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
All matches will be video streamed live on OSUBeavers.com.
Arizona State is ranked fifth in the nation and favored to claim the conference team title for the second straight year and fourth in the last five seasons. The Sun Devils will be challenged by Oregon State, which has three past national qualifiers on its roster, and Stanford, which has several nationally ranked wrestlers in what could be its final season in a Cardinal singlet as the university announced last summer that wrestling will be dropped.
Cal Poly also will be joined by CSU Bakersfield and Little Rock in the day-long tournament. Battling COVID-19 issues, CSU Bakersfield wrestled just two dual meets this season, while Little Rock joined the Pac-12 in May 2019.
Bernie Truax, who qualified for the NCAA National Championships a year ago -- the competition was canceled due to COVID-19 -- heads the Mustang contingent heading to Corvallis. Truax is 7-1 on the season with three falls and a trio of technical falls at 174 pounds.
Truax, ranked No. 17 in the NCAA Division I Coaches Rankings two weeks ago, is one of three Mustangs in the poll. The others are Legend Lamer, ranked No. 12 at 149 pounds, and Lawrence Saenz is ranked No. 27 at 141 pounds.
Lamer along with his 157-pound brother Brawley Lamer will enjoy a homecoming of sorts as both attended Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis.
Legend Lamer sports a perfect 9-0 mark with two falls, a technical fall and a major decision while his older brother Brawley takes a 1-3 mark into the conference finals.
Saenz, one of two Mustangs who transferred from Fresno State after the Bulldogs announced their wrestling program would be dropped after the current season, is 3-2 with a fall and two majors this season. The other ex-Bulldog, Adam Kemp, is 2-3 at 165 pounds.
The rest of Cal Poly's lineup for the Pac-12 finals consists of Antonio Lorenzo (2-3) at 125 pounds, Benny Martinez (1-6) at 133, Dylan Miracle (1-2) at 184, Trevor Tinker (1-4) at 197 and Samuel Aguilar (4-1) at 285.
Eight of last year's Pac-12 individual champions return, including Shane Griffith of Stanford at 165 pounds, the Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year as well as the conference's Freshman/Newcomer of the Year.
Others include 125-pounder Brandon Courtney, 157-pounder Jacori Teemer, 174-pounder Anthony Valencia and 197-pounder Kendell Norfleet, all of Arizona State; 133-pounder Devan Turner of Oregon State; 141-pounder Real Woods of Stanford and 184-pounder Josh Loomer of CSU Bakersfield.
Cal Poly's last Pac-12 champion was Colton Schilling at 141 pounds in 2018.
Qualifying allocations for each conference competing in the NCAA Division I National Championships, slated for March 18-20 in St. Louis, were announced by the NCAA two weeks ago.
The six-team Pac-12 will receive 10 automatic qualifying spots -- which will go to the champions of each of the weight classes -- and nine pre-allocations based on the five-year average (2016-20) of pre-allocations earned by the conference in each weight class.
For the Pac-12, there are two pre-allocated spots at 197 pounds, zero for the 133 and 184 classes and one for each of the remaining seven weights.
In addition, six or seven at-large spots are allocated nationally for each weight class, to be selected by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee after the conclusion of the seven conference tournaments.
