Nevada Clinches Season-Opening Series at Cal Poly with 12-6 Win
2/22/2021 8:30:00 PM | Baseball
Cal Poly rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to close the gap to 10-6 and had the potential game-tying run at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth, but a strikeout ended the threat and Nevada added two runs in the ninth to pull away.
Nevada improved to 3-1 while Cal Poly, facing the Wolf Pack for the first time since 2007, fell to 1-3.
Once again, Cal Poly stranded numerous runners on the base paths. After opening the series with a 4-0 shutout Friday night, the Mustangs left 11 runners on base in Saturday's 2-1 loss and 15 more in Sunday's 10-inning 11-8 setback. On Monday, Cal Poly stranded a dozen more.
Despite those numbers, the Mustangs showed some offensive life with a series-high 14 hits.
Myles Emmerson, who started the game at first base and finished up behind the plate, produced his fourth career four-hit game, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a pair of singles and three runs scored.
Center fielder Cole Cabrera, third baseman Tate Samuelson, second baseman Taison Corio and designated hitter Matt Lopez all had a pair of hits. One of Cabrera's hit was a solo home run leading off the third inning, Cal Poly's first home run of the year.
Corio drove in two runs with a third-inning double and a seventh-inning hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.
Each team used six pitchers in the game.
The win went to Kade Morris (1-0), Nevada's third pitcher who tossed two scoreless frames. Cal Poly starter Bryan Woo (0-1) suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs (seven earned) and eight hits over 3 2/3 innings. He struck out four.
Nevada's 13-hit offensive attack was paced by center fielder Dario Gomez and left fielder Jacob Stinson, each with a double and two singles. Gomez, right fielder Anthony Flores and designated hitter Matt Clayton all knocked in two runs.
Samuelson and Emmerson both finished the series with batting averages above the .400 mark. Samuelson was 7-for-16 with a double and triple, driving in four runs, for a .438 mark while Emmerson boosted his mark to .429 with Monday's four-hit game, going 6-for-14 in the series with two doubles, three runs scored and one RBI.
Cal Poly made two miscues in the field Monday and committed seven errors in the series which led to seven unearned Nevada runs.
Cal Poly will play its only non-conference road series this weekend at USC. Friday's game starts at 5 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. contest Saturday and the series finale Sunday at 1 o'clock.
