
Wick, Kemp Reach Semifinals of Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS -- A pair of Cal Poly wrestlers -- 165-pounder Evan Wick and 174-pounder Adam Kemp -- have reached the semifinal round of the 39th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
At the Las Vegas Convention Center, Wick won his three matches by technical fall, decision and, in the quarterfinals, a 9-0 major decision over Matthew Malcom of Nebraska-Kearney with a takedown and four-point near fall in the first period, another takedown in the second period and riding time.
Wick (7-0), the transfer from Wisconsin and a two-time All-American and three-time national qualifier, faces Cameron Amine of Michigan in Saturday's semifinals at 10 a.m. Wick is seeded No. 1 at 165 while Amine is the fourth seed,

over Kenny Duschek of Columbia in the first round.
At 174, Adam Kemp improved to 9-1 with a first-round bye and a pair of narrow decisions.
Seeded 14th, Kemp earned a 3-2 upset of No. 3-seeded Christopher Foca of Cornell thanks to riding time followed by a 4-2 overtime decision against sixth-seeded Troy Fisher of Northwestern, scoring a takedown in the second extra period and an escape in the last period.
The Fresno State transfer faces second-seeded Ethan Smith of Ohio State in the semifinals.
Lawrence Saenz at 141 pounds and Legend Lamer at 149 also reached the quarterfinals before falling Friday -- Saenz in a 20-5 technical fall and Lamer in a 7-4 decision. Both will compete in the wrestlebacks Saturday -- Saenz with a 6-2 mark and Lamer at 5-1.
Also still alive is Mustang 125-pounder Antonio Lorenzo as he won three of four matches and will take a 4-3 mark into the wrestlebacks. Lorenzo was unseeded but lost a close 3-0 decision to top-seeded Patrick Glory of Princeton in the second round and pinned eighth-seeded Tanner Jordan of South Dakota State in 4 minutes, 43 seconds.
Mustang 133-pounder Abe Hinrichsen won one of his three matches while Brawley Lamer at 157 and Samuel Aguilar at 285 both went 0-2.
Head coach Jon Sioredas held 184-pounder Bernie Truax and 197-pounder Trent Tracy out of the tournament due to injuries.
Cal Poly is ninth among the 26 schools competing in the two-day tournament with 35 points. Nebraska leads the way with 79.5 points, followed by Ohio State (71) and Purdue (53).
The championship and consolation finals on Saturday will begin at 3 p.m.
