SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The first preseason college baseball poll for NCAA Division I programs has been released, with Collegiate Baseball Newspaper placing Cal Poly 47th in its Fabulous 50.
Larry Lee enters his 20th season as head coach of the Mustangs armed with seven returning position starters, including three-time All-American shortstop Brooks Lee, and all but three of last year's pitchers, led by sophomore right-hander Drew Thorpe. Add to the mix a solid group of newcomers, several of whom could be in the starting lineup on Opening Day, and a pair of graduate transfers.
Cal Poly begins its run for a second Big West Conference title and fourth NCAA Division I postseason appearance in mid-February.
Texas is ranked No. 1 in the Fabulous 50 poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum. Last season, the Longhorns finished third at the College World Series and return seven position player starters and a stable of incredible pitchers including four Collegiate Baseball Pre-Season All-Americans.
The Southeastern Conference led all leagues with four teams in the top 10 and 10 teams in the top 50. The Big West is represented by UC Irvine at No. 14, UC Santa Barbara at No. 17, Long Beach State at No. 46 and the Mustangs.
In addition to the three aforementioned Big West teams, Cal Poly opponents in the rankings also include Stanford at No. 5. Among other teams receiving votes are Cal, UNLV and Fresno State.
The last time Cal Poly was ranked nationally was in 2016 as the Mustangs were No. 19 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll on April 25 before being swept at Long Beach State. Cal Poly was never ranked during the 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons but received some votes in a few preseason polls in 2018.
The 2022 Cal Poly baseball season opens with a three-game series against Washington on Feb. 18-20 inside Baggett Stadium.
