Cal Poly Falls at CSU Bakersfield in Friday Big West Opener
1/8/2021 9:07:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BAKERSFIELD – Sophomore guard Colby Rogers led all players and matched a career high with 18 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program trailed CSU Bakersfield wire-to-wire Friday evening and dropped its 2020-21 Big West Conference-opening matchup inside the Icardo Center, 62-49
Junior forward Tuukka Jaakkola added 10 points for Cal Poly (2-5, 0-1), which was playing its first game in 20 days after the program's opening two Big West series at Hawai'i (Dec. 27-28) and versus UC San Diego (Jan. 1-2) were cancelled. CSU Bakersfield (6-4, 2-1), hosting the program's first Big West home game after joining from the Western Athletic Conference during the offseason, was kept to a 38.2 (21-for-55) percent field goal mark. The Roadrunners though forced Cal Poly into 14 turnovers and a 20.0 (4-for-20) percent mark beyond the arc.
Graduate forward Riley Till grabbed a career best nine rebounds for Cal Poly, which closes its season series against CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. The matchup will be streamed once again via ESPN3.
Leading Friday's game from the onset, CSU Bakersfield opened up an 18-8 lead five minutes before halftime. Cal Poly responded during its next three possessions with two Rogers jumpers and one more from senior guard Keith Smith cutting the gap to four points. The Roadrunners, however, required just 59 seconds to record the game's ensuing eight points, regaining their double-digit advantage before eventually taking a 30-19 lead into the break.
CSU Bakersfield then opened the second half with 10-4 run to go up 40-23 with 15-and-a-half minutes remaining. Cal Poly twice cut its deficit to 14 points during the next three minutes. With Cal Poly trailing, 44-30, however, CSU Bakersfield scored the next six points and led by as much as 55-32.
