SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Legend Lamer, Bernie Truax and Lawrence Saenz earned victories that could propel them into higher national rankings, but Stanford won the final two bouts to overcome a 15-14 deficit and defeated Cal Poly 21-15 in a Pac-12 dual wrestling meet Thursday afternoon inside Mott Athletics Center.
Lamer, ranked No. 24 this week, edged No. 10 Jaden Abas 4-3 at 149 pounds while No. 33 Saenz earned an 11-2 major decision against Luciano Arroyo at 141. Truax breezed to a 19-3 technical fall versus Jared Hill, likely improving on his No. 22 national ranking at 174 pounds.
Cal Poly stayed even with the Cardinal until the final two bouts as Haydn Maley posted an 8-5 decision at 197 and Nathan Traxler notched a 10-1 major decision at heavyweight for Stanford.
"Proud of our effort today, up and down the lineup," said fifth-year Mustang head coach Jon Sioredas. "Our guys continue to lay it on the line and showed a sheer amount of grit. Because of this, we continue to improve at a high level. We are very excited about this young group."
The loss dropped Cal Poly to 2-2 on the year in dual meets. Stanford, a 24-12 winner over California Baptist earlier in the day, is 3-0.
Lamer (pictured at right), who is now 8-0 for the season, overcame an early 2-0 deficit with a second-period escape and a takedown with a minute remaining in the final period, knotting the score at 3-3. Lamer was awarded a penalty point as Abas was called for stalling, in the final seconds, and held on for the decision.
"Monster performance by Legend, who remains undefeated by knocking off a Top 10 opponent," said Sioredas. "He thrives in big-match situations and makes the most of these opportunities.
"His work ethic is so incredibly high and he continues to improve each week because of it," Sioredas added. "He is so much fun to coach."
Saenz, the transfer from Fresno State, earned four takedowns, an escape, a penalty point and riding time for his major decision. Saenz is now 3-1 as a Mustang.
Truax boosted his record to 6-1 with five takedowns, a pair of four-point near falls and riding time en route to his third win by technical fall this season. He also has three pins.
Cal Poly's other winner was 184-pounder Dylan Miracle with a 9-4 decision against Nick Addison, giving the Mustangs a 15-14 lead over the Cardinal. Miracle recorded three takedowns, a reversal and riding time as he led all the way in his match.
Mustang winners in extra countable matches include Logan Gioffre twice at 149 -- a 5-3 decision against Dawson Sihavong of Stanford and a 7-3 nod over Hunter Leake of California Baptist -- and Jarad Priest at 184.
Thursday's dual was the final at home for Cal Poly, which faces CSU Bakersfield and Arizona State for Pac-12 dual meets in Tempe, Ariz., on Feb. 11.
