UCSD Holds Off Cal Poly in 2nd Half to Split BWC-Opening Weekend
1/2/2021 6:19:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LA JOLLA, Calif. — Cal Poly narrowed its deficit to UC San Diego to just a six-point margin on Saturday in RIMAC Arena, but the Triton women's basketball team didn't allow the Mustangs to pull any closer, earning a Big West Conference-opening split at home, 74-63.
Sydney Brown scored a game-high 31 points to go with 14 rebounds for UCSD (1-1), which avenged a 90-68 loss to the Mustangs (5-3 overall; 1-1 BWC) on the same floor 24 hours earlier.
Sophomore guard Abbey Ellis netted 24 points for Cal Poly, all in the second half, and finished 10-of-11 from the free-throw line while securing a career-high 10 rebounds.
Senior forward Sierra Campisano added a 21-point, 10-board afternoon, shooting a squad-best 9-of-15 overall.
Brown knocked down a 3 on the final possession of the opening quarter to put UCSD up 15-12, before the Tritons closed the first half on an 8-0 run to head to intermission leading 36-23.
Midway through the third, Campisano sank a jumper before Ellis converted a layup, closing the gap to 45-39 with 2:48 remaining in the period. UCSD answered, however, with an 11-6 finish to the quarter, and safely held on the rest of the way.
The Tritons evened their record thanks to a 25-for-51 shooting display, including 10-of-26 from beyond the arc. It was the first win as members of Division I for UC San Diego, which was nationally ranked at No. 19 in D-II a year ago.
