SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Cal Poly wrestling team hosts Little Rock and North Dakota State for dual meets as part of a five-team event Sunday inside Mott Athletics Center.
The Mustangs face Little Rock in the first-ever match between the two schools at 10 a.m. on one mat while North Dakota State takes on Fresno State on the other mat.
At noon, Cal Poly takes a break while North Dakota State meets California Baptist on one mat and Little Rock takes on Fresno State on the other mat.
The meet wraps up at 2 p.m. with Cal Poly meeting North Dakota State. Little Rock will travel to CSU Bakersfield for a 5 p.m. dual meet.
Cal Poly, Little Rock and CSU Bakersfield all are affiliate members of the Pac-12 Conference for wrestling. Little Rock launched its wrestling program in March 2018 and hired head coach Neil Erisman in June 2018. The Trojans, the sixth member of the Pac-12 for wrestling, began competition in November 2019 and finished its first season 1-8 with a win over Ozarks.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fans will not be allowed inside Mott Athletics Center. Live stats and a video stream, however, will be available for the Cal Poly matches, with links on the wrestling schedule page at www.GoPoly.com.
Little Rock is 0-5 thus far this season, losing Pac-12 matches to Arizona State and Oregon State and also falling to No. 5 Oklahoma State, SIUE and Chattanooga in non-conference matches.
Last weekend in their home openers, the Trojans lost to Oklahoma State 36-4, with Paul Bianchi scoring the only points for Little Rock with a major decision at 133 pounds. Bianchi also won by forfeit in the SIUE dual while Alex Hernandez earned a decision at 165 and Dylan Johnson won by a major decision at 197.
Erisman was an assistant coach at North Carolina for four seasons (2014-18) prior to his selection as Little Rock head coach. He also has coached at Stillwater High School for one season and Oklahoma State for two years, both as an assistant, and has mentored 20 NCAA All-Americans and four NCAA individual champions so far.
As a wrestler at Oklahoma State from 2007-11, Erisman compiled a 92-36 career dual meet record and claimed a Big 12 Conference title in 2011 at 157 pounds.
North Dakota State is off to a 2-2 start. The Bison opened the year with a 19-15 win over Pac-12 member Oregon State, then fell to No. 12 Missouri 38-3 and Northern Iowa 27-11 before bouncing back with a 21-13 victory over South Dakota State on Jan. 10.
Top Bison wrestlers are No. 13 Jared Franek (3-1) at 157 pounds, No. 16 Brandon Metz (2-2) at 285, No. 18 Kellyn March (2-2) at 133 and No. 20 Dylan Droegemueller (1-3) at 141. Droegemueller, Metz and Franek were NCAA qualifiers in 2020. March is a freshman.
Cal Poly and North Dakota State have met four times in dual meets, with the Bison owning a 3-1 series advantage. Last meeting was in January 2017 at Righetti High School in Santa Maria, a 30-6 Bison win. The Mustangs' lone victory over the Bison was a 29-9 decision in January 2009, also in San Luis Obispo.
Tenth-year Bison head coach Roger Kish owns an 83-61 overall record and was an assistant with the Bison for two years before being elevated to the top post. He was a two-time NCAA runner-up and twice earned Big 12 titles at Minnesota and compiled a career 117-27 record for the Gophers.
Bernie Truax, who posted a 2-1 mark in the Cal Poly Tri-Meet on Jan. 3, losing only to No. 6 Demetrius Romero of Utah Valley on a takedown in overtime, is ranked No. 22 by TrackWrestling.com at 174 pounds. He pinned his Oregon State opponent in just 1 minute, 5 seconds last week to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Mustang 149-pounder Legend Lamer, ranked No. 25, and 285-pounder Samuel Aguilar both earned individual titles in the Cal Poly Tri-Meet against Utah Valley and Fresno State three weeks ago. Lamer went 4-0 with two decisions followed by a pair of falls. Aguilar won both of his heavyweight bouts by decision.
Finishing second for the Mustangs were Logan Gioffre at 157, Nathan Tausch at 165 and Truax and Jarad Priest at 174.
Lamer and Aguilar also were Cal Poly's other winners in the Oregon State dual -- Lamer with a technical fall and Aguilar via a first-period fall.
Among the other schools in the five-team meet Sunday, Fresno State will be competing in its first dual meet of the year after matches against Stanford and Wyoming were postponed due to COVID-19 issues.
