Golden Moments: Keyes Takes 6th Place at ’79 XC Nationals
11/11/2020 8:45:00 AM | Cross Country
Each Wednesday from September through November, Cal Poly will look back at notable performances from past fall-season teams, through the Golden 1 Credit Union Golden Moments in Mustang History series.
Maggie Keyes had already established herself as a trailblazer heading into the fall of 1979.
A year earlier as a sophomore, she recorded a 12th-place finish at the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW — pre-NCAA sponsorship) Cross Country Championships.
As a junior, however, she took things to another level, running in the top 10 while breaking the 17-minute mark, earning sixth place at Florida State's Seminole Golf Course.
She clocked a 5k time of 16:56.5 in Tallahassee on Nov. 17, 1979, leading the Mustangs to a 10th-place team score of 294 points.
North Carolina State's Julie Shea won the individual title in 16:35.0, lifting the Wolfpack to the team championship with 109 points.
During the regular season, Keyes described her usual strategy in an interview with the Telegram-Tribune.
"I feel out the first mile, then I run aggressively for the second mile to try to get position," the Tamalpais High grad explained. "In the third mile, I push as hard as I can with whatever I have left."
Also for Cal Poly, Kathy Peekins took 45th overall, at 17:44.1, and Eileen Kraemer finished 66th in 17:54.0. Kady Wanamaker (116th; 18:34) and Janice Kelley (136th; 18:48) rounded out the Mustang scoring.
"One has to be extremely satisfied," coach Lance Harter said to the Mustang Daily afterward. "You couldn't ask for anything better to cap a season."
