MISSOULA, Mont. — Cal Poly played the Montana women's soccer team scoreless for 79 minutes on Friday, but the Grizzlies broke through 10 minutes from full time, as McKenzie Kilpatrick tallied the game-winner at UM's South Campus Stadium.
Olivia Ortiz tested the defending Big Sky Tournament champions with a sixth-minute shot on goal, but Claire Howard stepped in front to nullify the early threat. Cal Poly also placed two more first-half shots on frame from Nikki Trucco (15' & 35'), but Howard was in position for the stops on each occasion.
Also prior to intermission, Cal Poly keeper Sophia Brown came up with a save against Alexa Coyle (16'), before denying Emme Fernandez and Coyle again on back-to-back opportunities in the 17th minute. The senior from Pleasanton then also turned back Coyle for a third time (28') before snaring away a shot from Sami Siems (35').
Megan Hansen and Megan Demijohn each also created a pair of shots for the Mustangs before the break, but their attempts sailed over the crossbar in the 22nd and 39th minutes.
Thirteen minutes after the squads returned to the pitch, Brooke Rubinstein aimed inside the left post with a low shot, but a Howard save kept the match level.
Brown would also come up with one more save in the second half, turning away Kennedy Yost in the 69th minute.
Ten minutes later, however, the Griz (1-3-2) would net the difference in the game, thanks to the first collegiate goal for Kilpatrick, a sophomore defender from Boise, in unassisted fashion.
The Mustangs (1-5-1) recorded one last shot in the 84th, but Hansen's attempt six minutes from the end of regulation angled wide-right.
With a six-save effort for the evening, Brown improved her career total of saves to 313, 67 back of the school record. Brown entered the match No. 47 nationally in save percentage, at .861.
Cal Poly will stay in Missoula through the weekend, taking on Idaho State in a neutral-field match on Sunday, kicking off at 11 a.m. Mountain Time.
