Podres Finishes in Tie for Second Place at UCSB Collegiate

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Cal Poly sophomore Tanner Podres earned his third top-five finish of the spring schedule Tuesday with a second-place tie in the UC Santa Barbara Collegiate held at the Sandpiper Golf Club.

Podres, who carded a 69 and 71 Monday, finished with a 75 on a windy Tuesday for a one-under-par 215 total, sharing second place with Ben Hallam of Cal Baptist and Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara.

Earlier this spring, Podres placed fifth in the UC Irvine Invitational and fourth in the Sacramento State Invitational.

Andrew Spilman of UC Riverside claimed the individual title with a three-under-par 213 total after rounds of 70, 71 and 72.

As a team, Cal Poly finished eighth. posting a final-round four-person 308 total for a 27-over-par 891 aggregate. UC Santa Barbara won its own tournament with an 868 total, followed by UC Riverside at 870 and Weber State at 871.

In addition to Podres, senior Thomas Lehman also earned a top-20 finish, posting a 74 for a 219 total and a tie for 12th place, his third career top-20 finish.

Dominick Hoover finished 41st, carding a 78 for a 230 total; while Will Draper and Adil Bir Singh shared 43rd place with 231 totals. Draper shot an 81 Tuesday while Bir Singh checked in with an 83.

Sage Casaga finished 53rd with an 82 for a 240 total. The tournament utilized six-person teams with the top four counting toward the team score.

Competing as individuals, Cade Casaga finished 36th with a 228 total after a final-round 80, Peter Faragia had a 77 for a 234 total and 47th place, and Bryce Loosigian posted an 80 for a 237 total and 52nd place.

Podres finished second in par-4 scoring at one under par while Lehman was fifth in par-5 scoring at five under par. Lehman carded a pair of eagles over 54 holes and Podres added one. Podres also carded 10 birdies, tied for second-best.

Cal Poly will compete in the 2019 Big West Conference Championship on April 29-30 at the Wailua Golf Club on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
