Three Eagles by Lehman Spark Cal Poly to 4-1 Win Over CSUN

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — Thomas Lehman carded three eagles, two of them on the same hole, to lead the Cal Poly men's golf team to a 4-1 victory over CSUN and seventh place in the Cal Poly Match Play Championship on Tuesday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.

With his father, 1996 British Open champion, five-time PGA Tour winner and 12-time Champions Tour winner Tom Lehman, watching, the younger Lehman curled in a 25-foot eagle putt on the 551-yard, par-5 13th hole, squaring his match with CSUN No. 1 player Paul-Louis Gachet.

On the 18th hole, a 498-yard, par-5 hole, the Mustang senior sank a 17-foot putt for an eagle, tying his match with Gachet once again.

And on the first playoff hole, also the 18th, Lehman (pictured above) rolled in an eagle putt from just three feet to win his match.

Also winning their matches Tuesday were Tanner Podres and brothers Sage and Cade Casaga.

Podres carded five birdies en route to a 2 and 1 win over Tomas Helgo while Sage Casaga was an easy 6 and 5 winner over Tomas Skajem as he birdied four of his first seven holes. Cade Casaga notched three birdies, the last on the 17th hole, to clinch his match against Michael Zhang, 2 and 1.

UC Irvine, which beat Cal Poly for the title in the last match play tournament the Mustangs hosted in 2015, won again Tuesday with a 3.5-1.5 triumph over UC Santa Barbara.

Sacramento State claimed third place with a 3-2 victory over Utah State while Weber State earned fifth place with a 3.5-1.5 win over Southern Utah.

Cal Poly will compete in its final Big West Conference Championships tuneup in three weeks, the Sandpiper UC Santa Barbara Invitational on April 15-16 at the Sandpiper Golf Course in Goleta.

UC Irvine 3.5, UC Santa Barbara 1.5 (championship)

Sacramento State 3, Utah State 2 (third place)

Weber State 3.5, Southern Utah 1.5 (fifth place)

Cal Poly 4, CSUN 1 (seventh place)
