
Podres Finishes Tied for Fifth Place in UC Irvine Invitational

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Tanner Podres earned a top-10 placing, his highest collegiate finish, as the Cal Poly men's golf team earned a seventh-place finish in the 10-team UC Irvine Invitational on Tuesday.
Playing at the Big Canyon Country Club, coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs finished the darkness-suspended second round with a four-person 294 total and carded a 301 total in the final round for a 54-hole 902 total.
Cal State Fullerton was the only team to finish under par as the Titans posted a 291 for a one-under-par 863 aggregate. Grand Canyon finished second, 11 strokes behind the Titans, and Santa Clara was third at 15 over par.
Podres recorded a 72 on Monday, finished his second round Tuesday morning with a 73 and capped his performance with a 71 for an even-par 216 total and a three-way tie for fifth place with Dalton Daniel of Cal State Fullerton and Matthew McCarty of Santa Clara.
Filip Lundell of Grand Canyon claimed medalist honors with an eight-under-par 208 total following rounds of 69, 71 and 68. Lundell won by four strokes over Jonathan Kang of UC Irvine, and Derek Castillo of Cal State Fullerton was another stroke back in third.
Mustang Thomas Lehman rebounded from a pair of 78s with a final-round 72 for a 228 total and 27th place while Will Draper checked in with a 76 for a 229 total and 29th place.
Also scoring for Cal Poly were brothers Sage and Cade Casaga. Both carded final-round 82s — Sage finishing 34th at 230 and Cade 58th at 243.
Podres (pictured above) topped the field in par-5 scoring at five under par while Lehman was seventh in par-4 scoring at two over par. Podres carded 13 birdies over 54 holes, fourth among the 59 golfers, and Lehman's 36 pars were No. 7.
Cal Poly returns to action Feb. 22-24 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, to be held at The Classic Club in Palm Desert.
