SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Former Cal Poly swimmer Jimmy Deiparine became the first Philippines swimmer in over a decade to win a gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games after he won the 100-meter breaststroke final on Wednesday in Capas, Tarlac, Philippines.
Deiparine, who swam at Cal Poly from 2011-15 and still holds the school record in the 100-breast, competes for the Philippines and has dual citizenship there and the United States.
His performance also set a new SEA Games record that had been held for 10 years.
Deiparine will look to qualify for this summer's Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
