RENO, Nevada -- Three Cal Poly freshmen wrestlers, all redshirts this season, were place winners in the 25th annual Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday inside the Reno Events Center.
Cole Reyes of Frontier High School in Bakersfield placed third at 125 pounds while Daniel Vizcarra of Gilroy High School earned a fourth-place finish at 149 pounds. Antonio Lorenzo of Antelope, Calif., and a graduate of St. John Bosco High School was fifth at 125.
"Our young guys had a strong showing at Reno," said fourth-year Mustang head coach Jon Sioredas. "They continue to develop as wrestlers and it is showing with some impressive results."
Reyes earned a fall in 2 minutes, 23 seconds, a technical fall by a 16-0 score and an 11-2 major decision to reach the semifinals, where Nick Raimo of Arizona State edged Reyes 5-3.
Reyes bounced back with an 8-4 decision over Jeremy Trinh of Fresno State in the bout for third and fourth place, finishing 4-1 in the tournament. Reyes earned two escapes and overcame a 4-2 deficit with a takedown and four-point near-fall in the final period for the win.
Vizcarra won four straight matches to earn a spot in the semifinals, scoring a 20-0 technical fall, a 4-3 decision and two falls in 1:14 and 3:15. In the semis, Vizcarra was decisioned 10-4 by Jaron Jensen of Wyoming.
In the match for third and fourth place, Vizcarra dropped an 18-0 technical fall to Mason Smith of Campbell and settled for fourth place with a 4-2 mark.
Lorenzo went 5-1 in the one-day event which attracted 25 teams, including nine Division I schools.
After a 6-4 decision and an 11-3 major decision, Lorenzo was defeated by Korbin Meink of Campbell in a 13-2 major decision.
Lorenzo won two more matches in the consolation bracket, both major decisions by 11-1 and 13-2 counts, before securing fifth place with a 5-4 decision over Justin Portillo of Grand View. Lorenzo earned an escape and takedown in the second period for a 5-3 lead and gave up only an escape in the final period for the win.
Trae Vasquez was 4-1 with two majors and a pair of decisions at 133 pounds while Wyatt Cornelison posted a 3-2 mark at 141 with a fall and two decisions. Dylan Miracle also was 3-2 in the 165-pound weight class, notching two decisions and a pin.
Cal Poly's third entrant at 125 pounds, Jack Lenox, won a marathon nine-period match over Keanu Perez of California Baptist. Lenox scored a first-period takedown and Perez a second-period reversal as the consolation match was tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation. In the first series of overtime periods, Perez earned an escape in the third period and Lenox was awarded a point for stalling. Once again, neither wrestler scored in the first two periods of the second overtime series before Lenox finally won the bout with an escape.
Not including medical forfeits, Cal Poly wrestlers won 30 of 49 bouts in the tournament.
Cal Poly hosts Drexel for its third dual meet of the season Thursday at 7 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center. The Mustangs are 2-0 with wins over San Francisco State and Buffalo while the Dragons bring a 3-2 mark into their dual versus Stanford at 5 o'clock.
