Cal Poly Wins Seven of Ten Bouts En Route to Dual Victory Over Buffalo

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Trent Tracy and Tom Lane won by major decision and Cal Poly claimed five other bouts by decision en route to a 23-10 dual meet victory over Buffalo on Saturday afternoon inside Mott Athletics Center.

Tracy was a 13-2 winner over Pete Acciardi at 184 pounds with a takedown and a trio of two-point near falls while Lane posted a 9-0 shutout over Sam Schuyler at 197 pounds, scoring a takedown, a four-point near fall, two penalty points and riding time.

Lane was ranked No. 7 this week while Schuyler was 13th.

"True freshman Trent Tracy had the performance of the day," said Mustang head coach Jon Sioredas. "He was able to secure a 13-2 major decision over a tough opponent, who was a New Jersey state champion and high school national champion.

"Tom Lane is wrestling at a different level," Sioredas added "He just majored an opponent who is Top 20 in the country. He has put in a tremendous amount of work this spring, summer, and fall. He is ready."

Benny Martinez opened things up with a 2-0 decision at 125 pounds.

Jake Ryan earned a 7-6 decision at 141 while Joshy Cortez was a 7-2 winner at 149. Brawley Lamer's 2-1 decision at 157 gave Cal Poly a 12-3 lead.

Buffalo pulled to within 12-10 before Cal Poly won the final three bouts.

After the wins by Tracy and Lane, Samuel Aguilar closed out the meet with a 1-0 decision at 285, scoring an escape in the second period.

"We showed a lot of grit up and down the lineup this afternoon," said Sioredas. "Benny, Jake, Brawley and Sam all gutted out close matches.

"We showed a great deal of improvement, especially on the mat," Sioredas added. "I believe we had riding time at six weights and only gave up riding time in one match."

Cal Poly (2-0) will compete in the Las Vegas Invitational in two weeks.
