
Cal Poly Senior Jimmy Castles Earns Top-20 Finish at The Goodwin

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Cal Poly senior Jimmy Castles earned a top-20 finish in a prestigious collegiate golf tournament this weekend, posting his second round of 70 Saturday at The Goodwin hosted by Stanford at the TPC Harding Park golf course.
Castles (pictured at right) finished the three-day 54-hole event with a one-under-par 212 total, sharing 20th place with six other golfers in the 26-team field. Castles carded four birdies and three bogeys Saturday.
"Jimmy played very solid golf," said Mustang head coach Scott Cartwright. "The course was set up well for his game. He's getting ready for the Big West Conference Championship."
Nick Engelhardt finished 92nd with a final-round 75 for a 223 total while Tanner Podres checked in with a 76 for a 225 total and 101st place.
Cal Poly finished tied for 23rd with fellow Big West member UC Davis with 36-over-par 888 totals as the Mustangs carded a 299 total Saturday.
Team champion Oklahoma edged California by three strokes, 828-831, with Stanford (836) third, Oregon (842) fourth and UNLV (849) fifth.
Crowned individual champion was Norman Xiong of Oregon with rounds of 65, 65 and 68 for a 15-under-par 198 total and a six-shot victory over Jeffrey Swegle of Stanford. Sebastian Crampton of Cal was third, Sam Triplett of Northwestern fourth and Collin Morikawa of Cal fifth.
Other scoring golfers for Cal Poly were Mitch Martin with a 78 for a 231 total and 122nd place, and Grady Smith with an 82 for a 239 aggregate and 134th place.
Castles finished second in the field of 135 golfers in par-5 scoring at six under par and was one of 17 golfers to card an eagle in the tournament.
Cal Poly returns to action April 9-10 in The Geiberger at PGA West in Palm Desert, Calif.
