Cal Poly Held to Three Hits in 5-1 Loss to Grand Canyon

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A trio of Grand Canyon pitchers held Cal Poly to just three hits and the Antelopes rallied from a 1-0 deficit with five runs in the final four innings for a 5-1 victory Saturday afternoon in the Tony Gwynn Legacy at Fowler Park.

Grand Canyon collected a dozen hits off four Cal Poly pitchers and scored twice in the fifth, once in the seventh and two more in the eighth to raise its record to 2-3.

Cal Poly, which upset No. 4 Arkansas 4-3 on Friday, fell to 2-4 with Saturday's loss.

Nick Meyer's safety squeeze bunt in the second inning gave Cal Poly a 1-0 lead. Grand Canyon answered with RBI singles from Marc Mumper and Channy Ortiz in the fifth, a sacrifice fly by Ortiz in the seventh and a two-run home run by Preston Pavlica in the eighth.

Cal Poly's three hits were singles by Alex McKenna, Kyle Marinconz (pictured above) and Tate Samuelson. The Mustangs are hitting .232 six games into the season.

Grand Canyon was paced offensively by Quin Cotton and Mumper with three hits apiece. Pavlica and Tyler Wyatt each added a pair of hits.

Fifth-year senior Mike Lundin (1-1) earned the victory, allowing a run and two hits over six innings with three walks and two strikeouts.

Mustang senior southpaw Trent Shelton (0-1) suffered the loss, though he matched his career high with eight strikeouts. Shelton gave up three runs and eight hits over six innings with one walk.

Cal Poly will play its final game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy on Sunday at 10 a.m. against Michigan inside Tony Gwynn Stadium.
