FULLERTON, Calif. — Brooke Rubinstein and Kelly Kessloff tallied goals at Titan Stadium on Sunday, leading the Cal Poly women's soccer team to a 2-1 Big West road win over Cal State Fullerton.
The Mustangs took the lead on the very first shot, two-and-a-half minutes from the opening whistle of the ESPN3-televised match. Rubinstein netted the go-ahead strike by dribbling deep into the right side of the box following a takeaway before shooting low to her left, beating Titan keeper Allison Poole inside the far post.
Rubinstein almost recorded a brace in the 14th minute, but her shot sailed wide, and Jordan Patane had a 47th-minute attempt deflected by the Fullerton back line to start the second half.
Cal Poly (2-12-4 overall; 2-4-1 for 7 conference points) doubled its lead in the 51st minute, as Kessloff stole an attempted clearance while stationed at the center of the penalty area. After corralling possession, she volleyed a left-footed blast into the right corner from 16 yards away, providing the 2-0 advantage.
The Titans (3-12-2, 0-5-1), 2017 Big West Tournament champions, pulled within a one-goal deficit 10 minutes later, as Kristen Swales converted off a feed from Dani Baldwin, maneuvering behind the defense for a 1-v-1 matchup with the keeper, finishing to the back of the net from 12 yards out.
Later on in the second half, the Mustangs created a handful of opportunities looking to re-establish the two-goal margin, starting in the 72nd with back-to-back attempts from Mackenzie George and Grace Park (each blocked). Rubinstein also saw another chance in the 81st minute, aiming over the crossbar, before Heather Huene (89') sent a header high in the closing moments.
Mustang junior goalkeeper Sophia Brown made six saves in the victory, including a 22nd-minute stop against England U-20 national squad member Atlanta Primus. She also denied CSF's leading scorer, Nano Oroñoz, 10 minutes from regulation full time, before also sending back Maddie Bennett (83') en route to holding on for the afternoon's 3 points.
Cal Poly returns home to finish the season against UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Oct. 28 Blue-Green Rivalry finale is also a Youth Day at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, with free admission for kids 13-and-under.
