
Three Mustangs Pick Up Wins in Blue-Green Rivalry Meet

SANTA BARBARA— Senior Cal Poly swimmers Nolan Newland and Zach Cootes each picked up a win apiece on the men's side and senior Bonnie Diamond won two events as the Mustang swim team competed against UC Santa Barbara Saturday in the Blue-Green rivalry.
On the women's side, Diamond won the 500 freestyle with her season best time of 4:58.05. She then won the 200 free with a time of 1:52.10, beating second place by a full two seconds. She also placed second in the 1000 free, swimming a season best time of 10:11.88.
In the 1000 free, freshman Alissa Marvin swam a personal best time of 11:08.05. Sophomore Ali Epple finished second in the 200 backstroke, finishing with a season best time of 2:05.54.
On the men's side, Newland won the 500 free with a time of 4:34.63, good for the third best swim of the day for the men's side. Cootes won the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.90, almost a full three seconds faster than second place. Elsewhere, senior Pearu Pold placed second in the 1000 free with a time of 9:42.31 and freshman Alex Nikolaev finished third with a time of 9:45.53.
In the team events, Cal Poly's "A" relay team of freshman Emelia Piccininni, junior Emily Imfeld, senior Elise Goetzl and senior Bonnie Diamond won the women's 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:30.70. On the men's side, the Mustangs finished second in both the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:04.89 and the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.06.
The men's team fell to the Gauchos 170-92 while the women's team lost 171-91.
Cal Poly closes out the regular season at home Saturday, Feb. 3 in a dual meet against UC Santa Cruz for senior day. The meet begins at noon at Anderson Aquatic Center.
